Beatrice I. Schmit, 101, of Berne, Indiana, passed away at 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton.
She was born on Sunday, Jan. 7, 1917, in Jay County, Indiana, to Peter and Veronica Eischen. On Dec. 12, 1939, she married Gilbert P. Schmit in Fort Wayne, Indiana; he passed away on May 7, 1994.
Beatrice attended Gibson School in Jay County. She was a member of the St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church in Geneva and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a homemaker who enjoyed her flower gardens, sewing for the Geneva Police Department and helping anyone in need. Beatrice will be greatly missed by her family.
Loving survivors include son Ralph (Rita) Schmit, Celina, Ohio, daughter Alice Minch, Bryant, Indiana, daughter Martha (Wayne) Bollenbacher, Celina, Ohio, and daughter Regina (Carolyn) Schmit, Chula Vista, California; son-in-law Paul Minnich, Portland, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father Peter Eischen and mother Veronica (Klaus) Eischen; husband Gilbert P. Schmit; son Richard Schmit and daughter Ruth Minnich; daughter-in-law Donna Schmit and son-in-law David Minch; brothers John Eischen, Joseph Eischen, Edward Eischen, Arthur Eischen and Sylvester Eischen; and sisters Elizabeth Homan, Mary Koenig, Matilda Schwoerer, Cecilia Eischen, Catherine Hartnagel and Vita Weitzel.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home 100 N. Washington St., Geneva, on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be prayer service held at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. A viewing will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday before heading to the church for the service.
A service to celebrate Beatrice’s life will be at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church, 5970 E. 1100 South, Geneva, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018. Father J. Bosco Perera will be officiating and burial will follow in the St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may go to Masses at St. Mary of the Presentation Church or Family Life Care (Hospice), 108 S. Jefferson St., Berne, IN 46711.
