Several classes are coming up at John Jay Center for Learning in Portland.
A ServSafe class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, July 30.
The class is open to all food service employees and emphasizes safe food and beverage practices to minimize the risk of food borne illnesses.

Jay County EMS and IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital will offer an Adult EMT Basic Training Class that details the skills and knowledge that an EMT Basic is allowed to demonstrate or perform while providing emergency medical care to the sick and injured. Classes will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday (including four Saturdays) beginning Aug. 9 and continuing through Dec. 8. The cost is $750. A conversational Spanish course will begin on Aug. 28. The six-week course is an introduction to Spanish fundamentals and will include basic grammar, common expressions and phrases and social introductions.
The class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday through Oct. 2 and the cost is $85. The instructor is Arturo Octavio Soto, a graduate of Ball State University and a native Spanish speaker.

Dance and picnic
The Darke County Singles Group will host a singles dance and carry-in picnic on Saturday, July 21, for those 21 and older, in the VFW Post No. 7262 Ballroom at 219 N. Ohio St. in Greenville, Ohio.
The picnic will begin at 7 p.m. Please bring a covered dish or make a small donation. Meat and table service will be provided.
Dancing will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. to The Drifters band that plays old time rock ’n roll and classic country.

Casey Shannon, Bryant, was named to the spring dean’s list at the University of Findlay (Ohio).
Christopher Link, Fort Recovery, was named to the May session dean’s list at the University of Northwestern Ohio College of Applied Technologies.
Audra Metzger, Fort Recovery, was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Wittenberg University.
Melissa Knapke, Fort Recovery, was named to the spring semester president’s list at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
Blood drive
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at IU Health Jay.
