Come to tonight’s public hearing
To the editor:
What was once intriguing to me while on my travels out West now nauseates me.
Yes, I am talking about the Jay County wind farms.
I love nature and the thought of preserving it. However, after researching wind turbines and first-hand experience I have become greatly discouraged.
There are a lot of things that concern me, but the issues that haunt me the most are:
1. No Jay County homes are powered by these turbines, nor is the power used anywhere in Indiana.
2. Studies indicate turbines are not able to pay for themselves in their lifespan.
3. Inconclusive results about wind turbine syndrome.
4. With ever-changing technology, our zoning ordinance is about 10 years old.
5. The fact that many other counties and states are banning wind farms.
6. The proper disposal of the massive machines when they are no longer used.
I am a fourth generation Jay County resident. My family has taken pride in our properties and work hard toward maintaining and preserving them for the past 100-plus years.
We have been providing homes for families in Richland Township during this time. It is not unusual for us to have the same tenants 10 to 20-plus years. Our tenants enjoy being away from the lights and noises of town life.
So when we were approached several times by Scout Clean Energy and their representative who tried to persuade us, we respectfully and repeatedly said no. We have do our best to protect the welfare of our tenants and ourselves.
If you are thinking, “wind farms do not affect me,” I want you to know I felt the exact same way just a few short years ago when they were proposed in the Bluff Point area. Unfortunately, no one told me that living in Jay County meant sooner or later they would be in my backyard too.
I encourage everyone to research the effects of wind turbines.
Visit the turbines already in Jay County. Be sure to pull over, turn your engine off and roll down your window.
Go to nationalwindwatch.org and visit the STOP Jay County Wind Farms page on Facebook.
Then please attend the public hearing at 6 p.m. tonight at Jay County High School.
Sincerely,
Anna Watt
