Oppose rule
POET Biorefining’s senior vice president of external affairs and communications has taken aim at the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule on the 2019 Renewable Volume Obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard.
“Proposed biofuel volumes are meaningless when the EPA continues to hand out waivers to the largest and most profitable companies in the world. Themore-than 1.6 billion gallons that have already been waived this year equal a 4 percent drop in the corn grind nationally, devastating for farmers who have faced more than four years of declining farm income and poor crop prices,” said Kyle Gilley in a prepared statement.
“Administrator Pruitt and the Trump Administration must stand up for farmers, immediately reallocate those lost gallons and cease bailouts to the oil industry. We are disturbed by reports that a reallocation plan was dropped due to pressure from oil interests. Refiners must be held accountable, and E15 must be available to consumers year-round. Only then will these numbers have any meaning,” Gilley said.
POET operates an ethanol plant southwest of Portland.

Closing stores
Walmart has confirmed plans to close three U.S. stores next month. A Walmart store in Corning, Arkansas, a town a population of less than 1,000, will close July 20, along with stores in Clinton, Illinois, and Edna, Texas.
“Our decision to close these stores came after much deliberation and consideration of various business factors. With all the change happening in retail today, it is more important than ever to make sure we are meeting customers’ evolving needs. That includes evaluating the performance of our store locations currently serving customers. At the same time, we are making substantial investments in our existing stores and significant investments in technology and innovation to help us better serve our customers and train our associates,” Walmart spokeswoman Tiffany Wilson said in a press release.
The population in Clinton is about 7,000. The store in Edna is located southwest of Houston in a community of about 5,500.
Need gas
The BBC reported this week that Coca-Cola says it has “temporarily paused” some production in Europe because of a shortage of CO2 gas.
There are also reports that the shortage is affecting deliveries of frozen foods, which are kept cool by dry ice, which is made by compressing CO2, the BBC said. At least five CO2 producers in northern Europe are offline for maintenance.
To discuss
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will hold a meeting next month to discuss regulating lab-grown meat, an industry that Tyson Foods has invested in.
Cultured meat is grown using cells harvested from animals. It is considered an environmentally sound alternative to traditional meat butchering, The Seattle Times reported. The FDA will have a meeting on July 12 to discuss the safety of the cultured meat and how to label the product to differentiate it from meat from animals.
Tyson Foods is the parent company of Tyson Mexican Original in Portland.
Add Coke
Arby’s customers can now get Coke-brand soft drinks with their meals.
The sandwich restaurant announced last week it had completed its nationwide conversion to Coca-Cola drinks.
