ANDERSON — In her first indoor meet this year, Calli Stigleman set a school record.
At her second, she broke her own mark.
Stigleman, a Jay County High School sophomore, lowered her own school record Saturday for the Patriot girls track team as it hosted the Patriot Invitational at Anderson University.
The sophomore, who on March 2 broke the record in the 60-meter dash held by sisters Lucy and Emma Laux with a time of 8.43 seconds, shaved two-hundredths of a second off her time by crossing the finish line in 8.41 seconds as she was ninth.
Lucy Laux was 19th in the event with a time of 8.62.
Gwen Omstead and Kendal Garringer were both sixth in their respective events. Omstead had a distance of 32 feet, 3 inches, in shot put, and Garringer had a height of 4 feet, 10 inches, in long jump.
The 4x200 relay team of Kinsey Shannon, Renee Omstead, Ashlyn Dow and Stigleman were eighth in 1 minute, 55 seconds.
Two set ACAC marks
Elayna Paro and Mara Bader both set new records Saturday for the Jay County middle school swim team in the Allen County Athletic Conference championships at Jay County High School.
Jay County’s girls totaled 279 points to finish third behind champion Bluffton (435) and runner-up South Adams (315). Bluffton totaled 434 to win the boys meet too, with Jay County scoring 366 for second and South Adams notching 149 points for fourth.
Paro had a time of 2 minutes, 17.78 seconds, to win the 200-yard freestyle to set a new ACAC record. Bader became the record holder in the 100 individual medley with her winning time of 1:06.4. Paro and Bader were also double winners as they were victorious in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.8) and 50 butterfly (28.7 seconds) respectively.
Chloe Summersett of South Adams was first in the 50 freestyle in 29.37 seconds for the Starfires’ only win.
Stars win ACAC
MONROE — The South Adams Middle School wrestling team won the Allen County Athletic Conference championship on Saturday at Adams Central.
The Starfires totaled 263 points for first, while Adams Central totaled 257.2 points for second. East Jay was third with 194 points.
East Jay had three individual champions. Tony Wood won at 75 pounds, Cameron Clark was first at 95 pounds and Blayne Daniels claimed the top spot at 117 pounds.
Cody Rowles (80), Cameron Gage (140), Mason Ludy (150), Ramon Bravo (175) and Joe Hemmelgarn (195) were all runners-up in their respective weight classes.
Nate Paxson was third at 125 pounds.
Results for South Adams and West Jay were not provided.
Smitley second at state
INDIANAPOLIS — Sawyer Smitley finished second over the weekend in the Indiana State Wrestling Association State Finals at Warren Central High School.
Smitley paced a group of a dozen local wrestlers who stood atop the podium at their respective weight classes.
Spencer Smitley, Cameron Clark, Conner Specht, and Dakota Chowning all finished third. Lita Chowning was fourth and A.J. Myers was sixth.
Placing seventh were Bo Huntsman and Tony Wood, while Mason Ludy, Chandler Chapman and Andrew Toney were all eighth.
Eagles in NASP
INDIANAPOLIS — West Jay’s archery team competed Saturday at the National Archery in the Schools Program state tournament at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The Eagles totaled 3,032 points to finish 30th out of 35 middle school teams.
Aaron Funkhouser was the top West Jay shooter with a score of 267, edging JaiDi Brunson by one. Dominick Newsome was third with 265, Paige Gillete was fourth on the team at 259 and Lizzie Dollar was fifth with 254.
The rest of the top 12 shooters for the Eagles were Raven Dale (252), Benjamin Hunter (252), Carter Shannon (250), Peyton Vaughn (247), Peyton James (244), Alex Ardizzone (244) and Thomas Charles (238).
