The Thunder needed someone to step up to fill a hole left by an injury.
Kyra Braun delivered, and earned conference athlete of the week honors.
Braun, a 2016 Jay County High School graduate, was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s tennis athlete of the week on Monday.
Normally the Trine University’s No. 5 singles player, Braun moved up to fill an injury and went 3-1 in helping Trine to the same record during a spring break trip to Florida.
After winning her No. 3 singles match on March 5 in Orlando, Florida, and No. 4 singles contest the following day in Kissimmee, Florida, the sophomore earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Samantha Felice of SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday back in Orlando. In the same match, a 5-4 Trine win, she teamed with Katie Simon to beat Gianna Papini and Gabriella Blitzer 8-3 in their No. 3 doubles tilt.
Braun returned to No. 5 singles on March 8 and fell 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 to Lauren Saiki of Judson (Illinois). She and Simon knocked off Diana Romero and Saiki 8-4 in their No. 3 doubles match, accounting for the Thunder’s only win in an 8-1 defeat.
The former Patriot is the second netter for Trine to be named MIAA athlete of the week in tennis. Kinnsey Pass received the honor back in September.

Wore a University of Findlay men’s basketball jersey for the final time on Tuesday as the Oilers lost to No. 2 Ferris State in the Division II regional championship.
The senior guard was 3-of-4 from the field and sank all three of his free throws to finish with 10 points. He also had six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in the season finale for the Oilers (28-5).

Kahlig had seven points and three assists on Sunday, helping No. 13 Findlay beat Bellarmine in the regional semifinal after notching eight points, three rebounds an assist and a steal in the tournament opener on Saturday, an 84-65 win over Drury.
The former Indian played in 120 games over four years for the Oilers, averaging 8.3 points per game. For his career he shot 43.1 percent from the field, including making 38.8 percent of his shots from behind the arc.

Had his collegiate basketball career come to an end on Saturday as the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team lost to Marian 90-74 in the second round of the NAIA Division II National Championship tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The senior was 4-of-8 from the field for eight points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing one assist in his final game for the sixth-ranked and No. 2 seed Warriors (27-7).
In the tournament opener March 8, Schwieterman was one of five players to score in double figures as he totaled 11 points to go with his three rebounds and two assists as Indiana Tech beat WVU Tech 89-83 in overtime.
The former Patriot finished the year having started all 34 games and tied for fifth on the team with 10.1 points per contest.
Abby Wendel
Jay County – 2016
Saw her sophomore season end in the first round of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship tournament on March 8 with a 97-69 loss to Morningside (Iowa).
Wendel was 2-of-4 from the field and split a pair of free throws as she finished with five points for the No. 20 Red Storm (30-4). She also had three rebounds, two assists and blocked a shot.
The guard shot 53.4 percent from the field and averaged 8.5 points per game.

Picked up his first win of the season for the Edison State baseball team on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Ohio State University-Mansfield.
The sophomore right-hander lasted four innings as the starter for the Chargers. He allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits and struck out eight. Both runs he surrendered came in the final inning of his outing.
Hobbs (1-1) has appeared in two games for the Chargers (3-4), logged 11 innings and compiled 11 strikeouts. He has an ERA of 2.45
Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Smacked five singles in helping the Bethel College baseball team to victories over Trinity International on Friday and Saturday as it wrapped up its trip to Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida.
He was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI in a 14-2 victory on March 8, then the following day recorded three more singles and an RBI sacrifice fly in a 4-3 victory.
The senior outfielder has 19 hits in 14 games, which is second for the Pilots (8-6). His .388 average is third on the team.
Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2015
Suffered his first loss of the season on Sunday for the Goshen College baseball team as it fell to Cleary by a 3-1 score.
The junior started on the bump for the Maple Leafs and tossed 6 1/3 innings. He gave up one earned run on six hits with four walks while setting a career high strikeout total with eight. Ingle dipped to 2-1 on the year while Goshen fell to 7-9.

Began her junior softball season by helping the Brescia University softball team as it beat Oakland City 6-4 on March 2 for the first victory of the year.
She was 1-for-3 with a run and a strikeout for the Bearcats (2-2), who thrashed St. Louis College of Pharmacy 16-4 in the second game of a doubleheader.
