Louise Kathryn Clamme, 96, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at IU Health Blackford County Hospital.

She was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Hartford City to Luther L. Schmidt and Ella Margaret (Cale) Schmidt-Clamme. Both her parents preceded her in death.

Louise attended elementary school at Dildine School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1939 where she was the class president her senior year.

She married Norman Perry Clamme on April 27, 1941, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hartford City. He preceded her in death on July 11, 1975. She spent her life in rural Blackford County, where she was a great Stewart of the Land. She was a homemaker and farmer’s wife.

Louise was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, being a Sunday School teacher, Confirmation teacher and helping with the youth choir. She was a member of the county-wide Church Women United.

Her love for reading and books has shaped many projects that she has been involved in over the years, including co-authoring several books with Sinuard Castelo for the historical society — “Dusty Bits & Pieces Vol I & II”, “Strangers Among Us”, “Grave Matters” and “Glassmen.” She also co-authored the 150th Anniversary Book for Zion Lutheran Church. She was active in putting together the book, “A History of Blackford County Indiana.” She became an entrepreneur and began buying and selling rare books.

Louise was a member of the Blackford County Historical Society and in 2014 she received the Indiana State Historical Society Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to History and Genealogy in her community, county and state.

She was an honorary member of the research club. Louise volunteered for numerous activities such as making quilts at Zion Lutheran Church to send to Africa and Red Cross Blood Drives. She enjoyed reading, doing cross word puzzles and working in her garden, especially with her daylilies. She was also a member of the National Audubon Society and enjoyed bird watching.

She will be sadly missed by her children, David N. Clamme of Hartford City, Margaret Rose “Peggy” Furniss of Westfield, Michael S. (wife: Judith) Clamme of Hartford City and Paul D. (wife: Jacki) Clamme of Hartford City; grandchildren Dr. Kathryn “Kelly” (husband: Dr. Greg) Furniss-Smith, Jason (wife: Becky) Clamme, Wesley Clamme (fiancé: Shelley Brumback), Matthew (Dr. Jennifer) Clamme, Scott (wife: Shay) Clamme, Sgt.
