BERNE — Addie Wanner helped the Starfire girls to a dominating victory.

The Starfire boys were a distant second.

Wanner picked up four individual victories Friday, guiding the South Adams High School girls track team to a huge win Friday in the South Adams Invitational it hosted.

The SAHS girls totaled 186 points for first place. Bluffton totaled 79 for second and Adams Central was third with 61 points.

Heritage won the boys invite with 175 points. South Adams totaled 74 for second and Southern Wells scored 63 points for third.

Wanner had the top spot in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles races, high jump and long jump events. Kallee Patch got wins in the 800 and 1,600 runs, as Taylor Augsburger (shot put), Olivia Von Gunten (400 dash) and Eliza Harruff (3,200 run) also got victories.

South Adams won the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays as well.

Lars In’t Groen had the only win for the SAHS boys, as his distance of 49 feet, 8.5 inches was best in shot put.



Stars win invite

BERNE — The Starfires won their own tournament.

 
Two days later they were rewarded statewide.

The South Adams baseball team won the South Adams Invitational it hosted on Saturday, and this morning the Starfires became the top-ranked team in Class 2A as voted by the IHSBCA.

South Adams (17-1), which has won 13 straight games, defeated Tri 3-1 in the tournament semifinal before holding off Frankton 5-4 in the championship.

Collin Shaffer hit a solo home run to tie the game with Tri in the bottom of the second inning, and the Starfires grabbed the lead with two runs in the fifth.

In the title game, Frankton tied the game at four in the top of the sixth inning, but it didn’t last long as SAHS notched the game-winning run in the home half of the frame.

Mark Clary collected three hits in for the tournament. Isaiah Baumgartner had a double.

Brothers Adam and Grant Besser recorded wins pitching.



SA splits

GARRETT — The South Adams softball team went 1-1 on Saturday in the Garrett Invitational.

The Starfires (14-4) dropped the semifinal to Manchester 2-1 before thrashing New Haven, 9-1.

Jade Baker had a triple, a single and two RBIs to lead the Starfires against New Haven. Isabella Ramirez had a double and two RBIs, while Kayla LeFever and Alexis Dellinger both had two singles. Anna Nussbaum, Tori Raugh and Emilie Hammell each collected a single.



Tennis falls

GAS CITY — The South Adams girls tennis team dropped a 3-2 match to the host Mississinewa Indians on Saturday.

Julia Grabau, the Starfires’ No. 2 singles player, remained perfect on the season, pushing her record to 12-0 with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Heidi Rowley.

The South Adams No. 2 doubles team of Breanna Potts and Jade Farlow won 6-3, 6-4 against Heavyn Miller and Gabby Stepenson.

Haley Gerber dropped her No. 1 singles match to Haleigh Rowley 6-0, 6-0, and Hannah Dull fell to Tyra Stanley 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. At No. 2 singles, Katrina Fosnaugh and Cassie Yoder lost to Abigail Tignor and Maggie Herring 6-3, 6-0.
