Despite poor defense, the Patriots are back above .500.
The Jay County High School softball team scored five times in the first inning and led wire-to-wire in a 15-5 thrashing of the Wes-Del Warriors in six innings Friday.
The Patriots (7-6) led 6-2 after two innings and were out front 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth. They tacked on five more runs for an 11-4 advantage, and led 11-6 before adding four more runs in the sixth inning.
Jay County, which out-hit the Warriors 19-12, committed eight errors in the field.
Aubrie Schwieterman led the Patriots offensively with two doubles, a single and three RBIs. Chloe Trissel and Hannah Phillips finished with a double and a single, as Kensey Litton contributed two singles and a pair of stolen bases. Kailee Denney collected a pair of singles.
Maggie Pryor, Kady Finnerty, Shelby Hiestand, Shelby Caldwell and Sam Twigg each tallied singles.
Denney got the win pitching for the Patriots.
Stars fall to Vikings
BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Huntington North Vikings on Friday.
Julia Grabau and Hannah Dull earned the only victories for the Starfires (11-4). Grabau won her No. 2 singles match 7-5, 6-2 over Kassidy Thompson as she improved to 15-0 on the season. Dull (13-2) knocked off Tarah Zumbrun 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

BERNE — The South Adams junior varsity baseball team rode a four-run first inning to a 9-3 win Friday against the Winchester Golden Falcons.
South Adams (11-6) added to its lead with a run in the third inning before making it 7-0 heading into the fifth. Winchester got on the board in the top of the sixth, but South Adams responded with two runs in the home half of the frame. Winchester rallied to score twice in the seventh but couldn’t muster much more.
Alex Gorney had a pair of singles to lead the Starfires, who got a triple and two RBIs from James Arnold. Tim Davidson and Luke Yoder both hit doubles, while Nick Miller, and Aaron Timmons both notched RBIs.
Yoder threw 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball to get the win. He scattered two hits, struck out nine and walked two.

OSSIAN — Jay County’s junior varsity softball team never trailed as it beat the host Norwell Knights 13-3.
The Patriots (7-1) scored six runs in the first and two in the second for an 8-1 lead. They added one more in the third before Norwell trimmed the margin to 9-2. A four-run fifth completed the scoring for the Patriots.
Maddy Rinker led the Patriots with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Drew Dressel hit her first home run of the season and finished with three RBIs. Rieley Brewster contributed two singles and scored three times while Haley GIllete tallied two singles.
Breanna Randall and Britney Mullins contributed a double apiece.
