The Patriots took two from a former sectional rival.
Jay County High School’s baseball team swept a home doubleheader Saturday, beating the Fort Wayne South Side Archers 4-3 and 6-5.
The Patriots (14-5), who have won six straight games, fell behind 2-1 after the first inning in game one and had to claw their way back. It was tied at three after the third inning before the home team got the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Jay County was ahead 6-1 heading into the fifth inning, and were put on the brink as the Archers plated four runs in the top of the fifth.
Ryan Schlechty collected a double and three singles with an RBI on the day. Twin brother Michael Schlechty finished with two hits, including a home run in game two, and had two RBIs. Wyatt Geesaman contributed two doubles and Cole Stigleman also had a double.
Isaac Moeller got the win on the mound in game one. He allowed three runs — two earned — on four hits with two walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Gaven Hare won in game two as the Patriots used four pitchers.
Stars win two
UNION CITY — The South Adams baseball team bounced back from its second loss of the season by winning a pair of games against the Union City Indians on Saturday.
The Starfires (20-2), who last week were the No. 1 team in Class 2A, defeated the Indians 12-6 in game one and won 21-11 in the second game.
Grant Besser led the Starfires with seven hits, including his fourth home run of the season and a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs. Terry Dawn (four hits), Braden Baumer (two hits) and Grady Sprunger also had doubles. Mark Clary and Dawn both tallied six RBIs.
Nic Stuber finished with three singles, and Sprunger had three RBIs.
Clary earned the win in the first game, allowing six runs — four earned — on seven hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
Adam Besser tossed 3 2/3 innings in game two for the win. He allowed nine earned runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
SA, Panthers split
BERNE — After suffering a big loss in the first game, the South Adams softball team salvaged a doubleheader split Saturday with the Eastbrook Panthers.
Eastbrook won game one 12-1 in six innings, and Class 2A No. 5 South Adams (16-6) rebounded with a 5-2 win in game two.
Jenna Myers ended the day with two hits, including a double in game one which was the Starfires’ only hit. Lexi Dellinger contributed a double and a single with two RBIs, and Tori Raugh also drove in a pair of runs on two hits.
Anna Nussbaum suffered the loss, allowing eight runs — seven earned — on 12 hits over 3 1/3 innings. She struck out five and walked one.
Jade Baker earned the win in game two, allowing two runs — one earned — on seven hits in seven innings. She fanned four batters.
Two finish second
CHARLOTTESVILLE — Two players finished second on Saturday as the Jay County girls tennis team competed at the Eastern Hancock Invitational.

PENDLETON — The Jay County junior varsity softball team got swept in a doubleheader Saturday with the Pendleton Heights Arabians.
The Patriots (7-3) lost 16-5 in game one before a 21-4 defeat in the second game. Both lasted only five innings.
Natalie Miles hit a two-run home run in the first game, and added two more singles. Justice Day contributed a double and two singles. Britney Mullins, Rieley Brewster and Trinity Current tallied two hits apiece, as Breanna Randall, Kenzie Ring and Abbi Kuss all chipped in singles.
Homestead wins again
Homestead Quality Bedding picked up a 15-5 win Friday over Portland Optimist in Portland Junior League’s Rookie softball division.
Gabi Petro had a triple and two singles for Homestead, which also got a double and two singles from Piper Myers. Khloe Myers had a double and a single, as Stella Skirvin, Ayla Jackson and Layla Armstrong all had three singles.
Complete stats for Optimist were not provided.
Fisher ekes out victory
Fisher Packing eked out a 5-4 victory over Jay County Therapeutics on Thursday in Minor softball action of Portland Junior League.
Adriene Denney and Nevaeh Armstrong both had singles for Fisher.
Mallory Winner led Therapeutics with a triple, as Dakota Chowning and Savannah Luger both tallied singles.
At No. 3 singles, Katy Hamilton was third.
