John Jay offering robotics camps
Taking Note
John Jay Center for Learning and Jay County Robotics are teaming up to host Vex Robotics Camps this summer.
Beginners/Newcomer Level Camps, for those with little or no experience, will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 4 through 8, June 11 through 15 and June 18 through 22.
Veteran Level Camps are for students onafter school teams, former campers or 4-H robotics members. They will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on June 25 through 29, July 16 through 20 and July 23 through 27.
The cost is $75 for three camps and includes lunch and a snack each day. The camps will be held at John Jay, 101 S. Meridian St. in Portland. To register, call (260) 729-5525.
Museum events
The Jay County Historical Society May program meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Museum of the Soldier, 510 E. Arch St. in Portland.
The program will include the history of the museum and a tour of the facility.
The theme of this year’s Jay County Heritage Festival will cover the history of some local organizations and their contributions to the community.
“Honoring Cincinnatus, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimistsand Rotary” will be the theme of the festival to be held Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.
New exhibit
A new exhibit is coming to the Arts Place Portland Center, 131 E. Walnut St.
A Maker’s Confession, featuring sculptural reliefs by Patrick Luber, will be displayed May 25 through June 27.
Luber’s work includes pieces made from recycled materials, aluminum cans and brass nails.
He has taught sculpting at the University of North Dakota for 27 years and his work is part of the collection at the North Dakota Museum of Art.
Photographer Barbara Eberhard’s display “An Alternate View” will be at Arts Place through Sunday.

Wes Wenning, a 2016 graduate of Fort Recovery High School, received the Sophomore award for the Department of Teacher Education: Intervention Specialist at the Ashland University Academic Honors.
Wenning is majoring in intervention specialist education.
Michael Vanover-Shreeve, Salamonia, was the recipient of the 2018-2019 Oklahoma State University Rodeo Team Booster Scholarship.
Vanover-Shreeve was awarded the scholarship at OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Scholarships and Awards Banquet.
Katy Smeltzer, Portland, was named to the spring 2018 Dean’s List atUniversity of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
