Vote in the IU trustee election
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Indiana University is one of only a handful of universities in the nation that allows its alumni to vote for a representative on the board of trustees.
Each year in June, any graduate of IU (any campus, any degree) can cast a vote for their choice of trustee. It’s so quick and easy to do.
Sadly, the vast majority of alumni don’t bother to vote, or aren’t even aware that an election for trustee is taking place. Last year, out of over 650,000 living alumni, only about 10,000 votes were cast. That is a turnout of less than 2 percent.
The board of trustees sets the vision and the direction for IU, and charges its administration with carrying out that mission. Most importantly, the board hires the president of the university to lead this charge. This critical function has a significant impact on the value of an IU degree.
As a candidate for trustee, I would urge all IU alumni to vote in this year’s election. Because of the low voter turnout, your vote is powerful in determining who represents you on the Board of Trustees.
