Joann Nelson
Joann (Curts) Nelson, 89, of Redkey, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 28, 2018, at her residence.
Joann was born in Dunkirk, Indiana, on July 8, 1928, a daughter of the late Edna (Hedgeland) and Ervin Curts. She was the widow of Charles Butch Nelson, who she happily married on Jan. 12, 1946.
She previously worked as a childcare giver for the Don Wolfgang family. She also worked at The Boston Store, Danners 5 & 10 and Wilson Shoe Store.
Joann was a 65-year member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and a lifelong Jay County resident who loved working in her yard, relaxing on her porch swing, doing word-find puzzles, participating in her special Bible Study group and spending time every morning at Bob Evans in Muncie.
She is survived by daughter-in-law Kathy Nelson of Dunkirk, Indiana; two grandsons, Chris Nelson (wife: Julie) of Parker City, Indiana, and Curt Nelson of Dunkirk, Indiana; and two great-grandchildren, Alex Nelson and Jordan (Gracie) Nelson of Parker City, Indiana.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jerry Nelson; three brothers, Lewis, Charles and Roll Curts; two sisters, Ruth Arnold and Mary Evelyn Winn; two half brothers, Ted Cunningham and Cloyd Curts; and two half sisters, Freda Blades and Georgia Ashburn.
Friends are invited to call Friday, June 1, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. at MJS Mortuaries – Redkey Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church in rural Redkey, Indiana, on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Scott McClain officiating. Burial will follow in Black Cemetery in rural Dunkirk, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Covenant Partners Ministries in Muncie, Indiana, or Jay County Cancer Society.
Arrangements have been entrusted to MJS Mortuaries – Redkey Chapel.
