Luther Sockrider
Luther D. Sockrider, age 89, a resident of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a former Portland resident.
Luther was born on July 4, 1929, in Portland, the son of Russell and Mabel (Cantrell) Sockrider. He graduated from Portland High School in 1947.
Luther was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, honorably serving in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Portland Forge after 42 years of service.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Portland, American Legion Post #211 in Portland and the Eagles Lodge in Portland.
He married Reiko Hashimoto on May 28, 1953 and she passed away on July 29, 2018.
Survivors include:
One daughter — Carolyn Longoria (husband: Max), Indianapolis, Indiana
Two sisters — Alta Slusser, Portland, Indiana, and Mary Lu Premer (husband: Philip), Pennville, Indiana
Four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the chapel in Green Park Cemetery. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the chapel with Pastor Larry Eads officiating. American Legion Post #211 of Portland will conduct military graveside rites.
Arrangements are entrusted to Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home.
