Brad DeRome is heading off to face a new challenge.
DeRome, who has served Jay Schools as business manager for nearly 19 years, was hired Tuesday to be the new chief financial officer of fiscally troubled Muncie Community Schools.
He will be the eighth CFO for Muncie schools in four years.
Citing “the lure of a new challenge,” DeRome has been signed to a two-year contract at $120,000 per year. He will start work in his new position on Dec. 12.
“I know that seems out of the blue, but I just kept being drawn to the challenge,” DeRome said this morning.
Ball State University took over control of the Muncie school district this summer under authority granted by the Indiana General Assembly. Muncie Community Schools had been struggling financially for years and had been under the control of an emergency manager prior to Ball State stepping in.
A new school board, appointed by Ball State, took office in July.
DeRome said his Jay Schools experience during a financial crunch 18 or 19 years ago when lease payments for Jay County High School had been diverted will be helpful in his new position.
“There’s some synergy there with what we had done,” he said. “We had to work very closely with the state at that time.”
State involvement and oversight through Ball State are aimed at getting Muncie’s situation in order.
“They crafted laws in Indianapolis just to help Muncie schools get back on a good footing,” said DeRome.
“It’s a new, exciting challenge,” he added. “Something that hasn’t been done before. I thought I was someone who could help make it work.”

DeRome received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ball State in 1984 and his master’s degree in finance in 1988. He serves on the board of IU Health Jay and is president of Portland Rotary Club.
He and his wife Lori will continue to reside in Portland while DeRome commutes to his new post.
As to his successor at Jay Schools, he said, “I think that will become clearer at the next board meeting,” speculating that an interim business manager will be brought in. “I’m trying really hard to make the transition go smoothly.”
Prior to joining Jay Schools, DeRome had worked in accounting positions at Naas Foods and Portland Forge.
