CONVERSE — The Patriots stayed with the Golden Eagles for three quarters.

They trailed by one after the first quarter, went into intermission down by three and kept the same margin heading to the final eight minutes.

The Golden Eagles pulled away down the stretch.

Jay County High School’s girls basketball team couldn’t catch up to the Class 2A No. 4 Oak Hill Golden Eagles on Tuesday in a 47-39 loss.

The Patriots (1-1), who return home Friday to host Bellmont (3-1), fell behind 14-13 after the first quarter and trailed 22-19 at half. Oak Hill (3-1) carried a 31-28 lead into the final period before pulling away for the victory.

Shelby Caldwell led the Patriots with 19 points, including 15 in the first half. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Madison Dirksen was second on the team with eight points.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 25-17. Aubrie Schwieterman led the way offensively with seven points, and Pacie Denney contributed six points.



Chiefs take two

The East Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both earned wins against the host Adams Central Flying Jets on Tuesday.

The eighth graders won 35-10, and the seventh graders got a 30-6 victory.

Renna Schwieterman led the Chief eighth graders (2-0, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) by scoring 20 points for the second consecutive game. Lydia Keihn followed with nine points, as Kylie Cross, Eden Abshire and Sophie Saxman had two points each.

Bralee Vanskyock scored eight points in helping the seventh grade Chiefs (1-1, 1-0 ACAC). Cash Hollowell tallied six points and Saxman tallied four points. Ellie Wendel, Maggie Dillon, Hannah Laux, Breanna Dirksen, Molly Muhlenkamp and Danielle May all had two points.



Weitzel leads in win

MONROE — Bennett Weitzel scored in double figures Monday, helping the East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team to a 37-34 victory over the host Adams Central Flying Jets.

The seventh grade Chiefs lost, 35-20.

Weitzel led the Chief eighth graders (1-1, 1-0 ACAC) with 11 points, and Josh Dowlen was second with six points. Dusty Pearson and Blake Bogenschutz both had five points as Owen Ransom and Brady Davis finished with four points each. Carter Link chipped in two points.

Zac McAbee led the seventh grade squad (0-2, 0-1 ACAC) with eight points. Sam Myers tallied three points and Koby Lewellen collected three points. Wesley Bihn and Abraham Dirksen helped with two points apiece.
