Kurt Rammel wants to be with his loved ones more.
The long hours and time away from family have taken a toll.
Fort Recovery School Board on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Rammel as athletics director. Rammel had served in the position since 2013.
“In the job you have a lot of long days, long hours,” said Rammel, whose last day will be Dec. 12. “It is a decision that was best with my family and my kids. With my family growing it’s easier for me to step away and be a full-time husband and a full-time dad.”
Rammel, a Coldwater native who replaced longtime AD Barb Sautbine, has two kids, 3-year-old Nathan and 1-year-old Greyson.
Fort Recovery superintendent Justin Firks complimented the work Rammel has done in his five years at the helm. He mentioned some of the athletics successes, including the football state championship in 2015, the Midwest Athletic Conference championship in baseball in 2018 and the various athletes who have competed at the state level.
“I think Kurt’s done a great job,” Firks said. “You look at the development of facilities. You look at the coaching hires he’s brought in. You look at the success of our programs … Kurt’s been phenomenal to work with.”
While he has immediate plans to stay in Fort Recovery, Rammel will leave athletics and education, changing careers with Marketing Essentials in New Bremen.
But he will remember his time as a first-time athletics director fondly.
“Building relationships with staff and students at Fort Recovery, that’s something that’s special and what I will always hold special, getting to know each of them on a different level,” he said. “Watching them compete and represent the school and community as well as the person they become.”
The job has been posted, Firks said, and applications will be accepted for a couple of weeks. Possibilities include hiring a full-time replacement for Rammel or bringing in someone on an interim basis to fulfill duties after his departure.
Rammel graduated from Coldwater in 2002 and attended Defiance College to play baseball. He transferred to Tiffin to continue his playing career, and in 2007 earned a bachelor’s degree in managerial studies. Two years later he received a master’s degree in business administration with a focus on sports management.
He was an assistant baseball coach at Tiffin and also with the Grand Lake Mariners.
