FORT RECOVERY — The Indians hosted the top team in the state for the second consecutive year.
And they protected their home court again.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team, which is ranked No. 4 in Division IV, remained in contention for a Midwest Athletic Conference title by upsetting top-ranked St. Henry 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-11 at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
It comes a year after the Tribe handed eventual state champion New Bremen its only loss of the season.
Cassidy Martin led the Tribe (17-2, 6-1 MAC) with 18 kills. Paige Fortkamp joined her in double figures with 14 kills, and Brooke Gaerke tallied eight kills. Olivia Patch’s six blocks were tops on the team, and Madi Rammel contributed 41 assists. Hannah Knapke recorded 28 digs.
Fort Recovery, which has not won a MAC title in almost three decades, is tied atop the conference standings with No. 3 New Bremen and St. Henry. The Tribe closes the season against MAC foes New Bremen (17-2, 6-1 MAC) and Versailles (10-9, 3-4 MAC).
The Indians’ junior varsity squad fell to the Redskins, 25-23, 20-25, 25-21. Ava Bubp led the way with eight kills. Brenna Homan finished with 32 digs and Hope Wendel tallied 24 assists.
Chiefs sweep
In their final regular season match Thursday, the East Jay Middle School volleyball teams all defeated the Muncie Southside Panthers.
The eighth graders picked up a 25-11, 25-12 win, the seventh grade team got a 25-16, 25-19 victory and the sixth graders edged the Panthers, 17-25, 25-24, 25-14.
Renna Schwieterman posted nine kills for the eighth graders (7-11), which also got 11 points from Kylee Carreno, who shared the team-high of four aces with Madison Brunswick. Natalie Wehrly chipped in four digs.
Sophie Saxman paced the seventh graders with eight kills, and Riah Champ finished with six aces on her way to eight points. Maggie Dillon’s 11 points were tops on the team, and Bralee VanSkyock notched six assists.
Jaelynn Lykins led the sixth grade squad with 12 aces and 17 points. Kenzie Huey added three kills.

Kaiden Ridenour and Dawson Hundley both had two touchdowns, one of Hundley’s coming on a kickoff return, for the eighth graders. Josh Dowlen and Carter Link also had rushing TDs.
Sam Myers and Tristin Stout both scored for the seventh graders. Stout had a 70-yard TD run, and Myers rushed for a 65-yard score. Parker Nichols threw a 20-yard TD pass to Cody Rowles.

Troy Homan’s two TDs and 2-point conversion led the seventh graders (3-2-1). Reece Guggenbiler and Nate Jutte had a touchdown and two-point conversion respectively.
