BUTLER — The Starfires got the worst draw possible.
In a field with six other teams, they had to play the only ranked squad to begin sectional.
No problem.
The South Adams High School volleyball team upset the sixth-ranked Blackhawk Christian Braves on Tuesday, 25-15, 25-21, 15-25, 28-26 in the opening round of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament at Eastside.
The Starfires (20-11) advance to the sectional semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday against Canterbury. The sectional final is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday.
Shaelynn Bowman had a career-high 19 kills for the Starfires while also adding seven digs and three aces.
Carlie Sealscott, Lydia Loshe and Gabriella Bailey all had three kills apiece.
Defensively, Hannah Dull led the squad with 21 digs, Josie Grabau collected 20 digs and Sealscott contributed 19 digs.
Grabau finished with 22 assists.
Stars drop finale
BERNE — The South Adams Middle School football team dropped its season finale Tuesday, 13-6 to the Woodlan Warriors.
The only score for the Starfires (2-4, 2-4 Allen County Athletic Conference) came in the fourth quarter as Brady Beall threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Dee. Beall completed five of his 11 pass attempts for 82 yards with a pair of interceptions.
Maverick Summersett led the SAMS rushing attack with 87 yards on 18 carries.
Silas Loshe finished with seven tackles, and Gavin Myers tallied two tackles for loss.
