WOODBURN — East Jay Middle School’s cross country teams swept a meet with West Jay and host Woodlan on Tuesday.

The EJMS boys totaled 23 points, ahead of Woodlan (50) and West Jay (92). The Chief girls totaled 21 points, while Woodlan (34) was runner up. West Jay did not qualify for a team score.

Cameron Clark was the top EJMS runner as he was second overall in 11 minutes, 22 seconds. Thomas Lemaster (third), Grayson Williams (fifth), Tony Wood (sixth) and Sheldon Minch (seventh) also scored for the Chiefs.

Skyler Bee led West Jay as he crossed the finish line in 16th. Also scoring were Aiden Stephens (22nd), Lukes Powers (25th), Jason Ayala (29th) and Caleb Dollar (33rd).

Lydia Keihn of East Jay was the overall race winner in 11:50. Mara Bader (second), Natalie Carreno (third), Mallory Winner (seventh) and Makaylah Brainerd (eighth) helped the Chiefs dominate.

Gabi Bilbrey (13th) was the top Eagle runner.



Jay falls to Jets

The Jay County middle school seventh and eighth grade football teams both lost to Adams Central on Tuesday at East Jay.

The eighth graders (1-2) dropped a heartbreaker, 21-19, while the seventh graders (0-3) failed to reach the end zone in a 33-0 defeat.

Brady Davis and Carter Link each had rushing touchdowns for the eighth graders. 

Patrick Hemmelgarn threw a touchdown pass to Josh Dowlen.

Defensively, Davis and Dowlen had fumble recoveries.

Parker Nichols led the seventh grade squad in both passing yards (30) and rushing yards (seven). Sam Myers caught Nichols’ only completion.

 
Chief spikers lose

WOODBURN — East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both dropped matches to the host Woodlan Warriors on Tuesday.

The eighth graders (0-3) lost 25-17, 22-25, 15-6, while the seventh graders (2-1) fell 21-25, 25-20, 15-9.

Madison Brunswick and Laci McGinnis had five and three kills respectively for the eighth graders. Renna Schwieterman tallied eight service points, while McGinnis and Brunswick each tallied four points.

Sophie Saxman led the seventh graders with three kills while also adding three aces and three points. Brenna Haines finished with four aces and tallied 10 service points, and Maggie Dillon collected eight service points.



Bruns leads in loss

CELINA, Ohio — Jalyn Bruns continues to be the top Indian golfer.

The squad still struggles as a whole.

Fort Recovery High School’s girls golf team fell to the host Celina Bulldogs on Tuesday, 208-235 at Celina Lynx Golf Club.

Bruns, a freshman, led the Indians by carding a 52. Sophomore Shelby Stammen was second on the team with 59, and Devin Jutte was one stroke behind for the team’s third-best score.

Kendra Dues and Alli Vaughn had matching scores of 64 to complete Fort Recovery’s team total.

Trisha Gaerke also competed, but her 68 did not factor into the Tribe’s score.

Kendra Marsee of Celina earned match medalist honors with 47.



SA gets 10th win

BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team picked up its 10th win of the season Tuesday by sweeping the Southern Wells Raiders, 25-21, 25-8, 25-14.

Freshman Carlie Sealscott led South Adams (10-5, 1-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) with nine kills, while also contributing eight digs and a pair of aces.

Lydia Loshe tallied five kills, and Josie Grabau collected 14 assists. Hannah Dull racked up a dozen digs.

The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 25-12, 25-13.

Savannah Alberson led the team with three kills, Jade Baker finished with 13 aces and Taylor Braun had eight assists.



Starfires blank ’Dogs

BERNE — Eight players scored goals in powering the South Adams girls soccer team in a 10-0 thrashing of the New Haven Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Emilee Myers led the squad with two goals and an assist, and Madi Smith also found the back of the net twice. Kayla LeFever chipped in a goal and assist. Lauren McKean, Becca Bertsch, Macy Hirschy, Kirstein Herman and Ali Smith also notched goals.

Anna Nussbaum, Mallory Hirschy, Morgan Grote, Kristen Wynn, Sami Bertsch and Kelsa Ortiz all recorded assists.

Josie Hall had two saves, and Jenna Myers didn’t face a shot on goal.

Bluffton beats SA

BERNE — The South Adams Middle School’s football team lost Tuesday to the Bluffton Tigers, 20-6.

Brady Beall had the lone touchdown for SAMS (1-1, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference), as he found the end zone on a 15-yard run in the second quarter. He finished with 56 yards on the ground.

Silas Loshe and Esmael Rodriguez had interceptions, and Jordan Haight recovered a fumble.



FR tops Wildcats

MINSTER, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both swept the Minster Wildcats on Tuesday.

The seventh graders won 25-12, 26-25, and the eighth graders won 25-15, 25-16.

Teigan Fortkamp finished with three kills for the seventh grade team, while Allison Knapke collected seven aces. Mara Pearson had four assists.

Allysen Fullenkamp’s eight aces paced the seventh grade team. Brooklyn Jutte and Audra Bubp had five aces each.
