Preparations are underway for the Jay County Heritage Festival set for Sept. 22 and 23.
Jay County Historical Society members and volunteers are working on the event which will honor local service organizations: Cincinnatus, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists and Rotarians.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 22 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23.
Entertainment will include the Jay Community Band, Erica Frazee, George Lopez, the Cross Connections, the Christianaires, the Mountain Laurel Bluegrass Gospel group and the Thien Snipps.
As usual, the grounds of the Jay County Historical Museum at the end of East Main Street in Portland will be filled with crafters, historic displays, and food vendors. More displays will be featured inside the museum.
Plans call for representatives of local service clubs to be interviewed on stage between the entertainment acts.
Admission to the event is free.

Fort Recovery State Museum and Fort Recovery Retail Merchants will host Open Doors Ohio for a special event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Open Doors focuses on drawing attention to historic structures across the state. Locations featured during the Fort Recovery event will be the state museum, which will be celebrating its 80th birthday, the former opera house that was in operation in the late 1800s and early 1900s, local murals and other village merchants.
Participants in the free event can start at the museum, which will have maps guiding them to all of the sites that are participating.

LifeStream and the Richmond Senior Community Center are partnering to offer EnhanceFitness, a fitness program designed for older adults. Classes will begin Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and continue every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year at the Richmond Senior Community Center located at 1600 S. 2nd St., Richmond.
EnhanceFitness is an energetic, interactive hour-long fitness class filled with variety. The program focuses on the three main elements of fitness including strength training, flexibility and balance, as well as aerobic and cardio. EnhanceFitness allows the participant to work at their own pace the entire time with individualized attention from the instructor and modifications to the program to fit with the participants’ fitness level.

Mercer Health will offer free cancer screenings next month.
Screenings are scheduled for 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 18 and 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at Community Medical Center in Celina, Ohio. The clinic is open to men ages 55 to 75 who do not have an established urology provider or a personal history of prostate cancer.
