MONROE — One day after having a positive record, the Patriots are back even.

Jay County High School’s boys tennis team managed to take only one game Tuesday in a 5-0 loss to the host Adams Central Flying Jets.

The No. 1 doubles team of Xavier Ninde and Sheldon Upp lost to Lucas Van De Weg and Nathan Maldeny 6-0, 6-1. The other four matches were clean sweeps.

Conner Benter dropped his No. 1 singles match to Jaxson Rinkenberger 6-0, 6-0, and Gabe Blankenship fell at No. 2 singles to Cameron Burkhart by the same margin.

At No. 3 singles, Crosby Heniser dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Lucas Harvey.

The Patriots’ No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Randall and Calvin Whitney lost to Malakai Moore and Kane Clark 6-0, 6-0.

Jay County’s junior varsity team fell 5-1. Frankie Crump and Gavin Myers earned the lone win for the Patriots.



Stars sink ’Dogs

GENEVA — As the regular season winds down, the South Adams girls golf team grabbed a 214-259 win against the New Haven Bulldogs on Tuesday at Wabash Valley Golf Club.

Millie Gaskill earned her first medalist honor as she led South Adams by firing a 49. Shayla Welch was two strokes behind and Katie Stiltner was third on the team with 55. Maggie Evans posted a round of 59 to complete the Starfires’ team score.

Hannah Hinshaw also played, but her 71 did not factor into the team total.

South Adams closes the season today at Norwell, and plays in the sectional tournament Saturday at Timber Ridge in Bluffton.



Soccer gets win

RICHMOND — Two goals in the first half was all the Jay County boys soccer team needed in a 3-1 win over the Richmond Red Devils on Tuesday.

Ian McCombs and Hunter Shumaker both scored in the first half to stake Jay County (2-5) to a 2-0 lead at intermission. Daniel Fugiett added a second-half goal for an insurance tally.

Gio Perod and Cristian Merentes both tallied assists in the victory.

 
Tribe sweeps Jays

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both swept the St. John’s Blue Jays on Tuesday.


The seventh graders won 25-11, 27-25, and the eighth graders picked up a 25-13, 25-9 win.

Megan Evers led the seventh graders with three kills, while Natalie Brunswick and Mara Pearson had two kills each. Teigen Fortkamp contributed four aces.

Grace Klingshirn’s nine kills paced the eighth graders, and Amy Stammen chipped in four aces. Audra Bubp tallied six aces.



Jay tops Raiders

PONETO — Jay County’s middle school eighth grade football team blasted Southern Wells on Tuesday, 48-6.

Dawson Hundley had 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Patriots (2-2). Patrick Hemmelgarn, Brady Davis and Owen Ransom all added TDs. Carter Link tallied four 2-point conversions.

Defensively, Payton James and Payton Bennett both recovered fumbles.



Patriots blanked

MONROE — The seventh grade Jay County middle school football team got blanked by the host Adams Central Jets on Tuesday, 30-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Jets scored 14 points in the third before adding 16 more in the final period.

Tristin Stout had 30 rushing yards for the Patriots (0-4), and Sean Carpenter added 11. Parker Nichols had 28 yards passing, including a 20-yard toss to Liam Garringer.

Tayden McDowell’s nine tackles led the team defensively.



Chiefs fall

The seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams from East Jay both came out on the losing end of matches with Adams Central on Tuesday.

The eighth graders (1-4) fell 25-19, 25-13, while the seventh graders (3-2) lost 25-13, 25-18.

Renna Schwieterman had three kills to lead the eighth graders, who also got eight and three digs respectively from Natalie Wehrly and Gracie Barnett. Lauren Brewster was a perfect 10-for-10 on her serves, including three points and a pair of aces.

Sophie Saxman led the seventh grade squad with two kills and four digs. Riah Champ and Brenna Haines each had three service points.
