HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots had a 1-0 lead when their game with the Bruins was postponed because of weather more than a week ago.

The offense poured on the goals as the game picked up Monday.

Jay County High School’s boys soccer team scored one more first half goal and added three more in the second half in a 5-1 drubbing of the Blackford Bruins on Monday.

The game was picked up with less than seven minutes to play in the first half as it was suspended because of thunderstorms on Sept. 6.

Korbin Auker put the Patriots (4-6) out front 1-0 before the skies opened up and halted play. He added another goal on Monday.

Hunter Shumaker, Gio Perod and Cristian Merentes all tallied goals as well. Ian McCombs tallied three assists, and Brinnin Wasson also had a helper.



Jay falls to Bellmont

DECATUR — Jay County’s boys tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to the host Bellmont Braves on Monday.

Xavier Ninde and Conner Benter got the only win for the Patriots (3-5), knocking off Noah Zimmerman and Mason Vrabliz 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in their No. 1 doubles contest.

At No. 1 singles, Gabe Blankenship fell to Cole Shifferly 6-0, 6-0, and Crosby Heniser dropped his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-1.

Christian Romero lost to Parker Braun 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Randall and Sheldon Upp fell to Prestin Siefring and Joe Mendoza 6-4, 6-1.

The Patriots’ junior varsity team fell 6-0.



Fugiett fifth

YORKTOWN — Sophia Fugiett finished in the top 10 Saturday as the Jay County girls cross country team placed sixth at the Yorktown Invitational.

The girls totaled 165 points. Jay County’s boys totaled 330 points for 14th.

Complete results were not available.

Fugiett, a sophomore, was fifth overall in 21 minutes, 11 seconds. Raven Weaver (22nd), Lindy Wood (28th), Miranda Alig (43rd), and Lita Chowning (67th) all scored for the Patriots.

Skyler Myers was the top JCHS boy as he placed 35th in 18:40. Tayler Smeltzer (52nd), Mitchell Winner (76th), Aaron Funkhouser (83rd) and Dustin Harris (84th) were the top five runners for the squad.

Tribe tops Spartans

CELINA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls golf team earned a 225-245 win against the Lima Senior Spartans on Monday at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.

Jalyn Bruns led the Indians by shooting 50 to grab match medalist honors. Shelby Stammen was second with 55, and Devin Jutte totaled 58 to finish third on the squad.

Reagan Grieshop shot 62 to complete the team score.

Alli Vaughn (63) and Kendra Dues (64) also competed.



Late score sinks Jay

The Jay County junior varsity football team gave up a fourth-quarter touchdown to the Bluffton Tigers in a 16-14 loss Monday.

The Patriots (2-3) were tied with the Tigers 8-8 heading into the second quarter and went into halftime ahead 14-8. But the score in the fourth put Jay County one game below .500.

Quinn Faulkner completed seven of his 19 pass attempts for 109 yards and a touchdown. He also contributed 33 rushing yards. Sheldon Eley caught five passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.



Chief sixth wins

MUNCIE — East Jay Middle School’s sixth grade volleyball team picked up a win over the host Delta Eagles on Monday, 19-25, 25-23, 25-11.

The Chief eighth graders (25-10, 25-16) and seventh graders (25-16, 20-25, 15-11) both lost to the Eagles.

Jaelynn Lykins led the EJMS sixth graders (4-3) in kills (three), aces (nine) and service points (14). Jordyn Hutzler notched four aces and two kills, as Meredith Dirksen contributed two kills as well.

Renna Schwieterman tallied four kills to pace the eighth graders. Madison Brunswick tallied two kills and had two total blocks, while Gracie Barnett recorded three digs.

For the seventh graders, Brenna Haines posted team highs in aces (five), kills (four) and digs (three) while also going 11-of-12 from the service line. Riah Champ notched eight points and three kills.
