Portland Fire Department responded to a car that caught on fire and damaged a garage Wednesday.
Firefighters were called at 5:09 p.m. to 213 E. Race Street, Portland, owned by Larry Stuckey, for a report of a 1995 Ford Escort that had caught on fire in the driveway. According to a department report, the fire started while Stuckey was using a cutting torch on the car. The fire melted siding on the garage, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage.
The department sent 13 firefighters and one firetruck to the scene and the fire was out by 5:27 p.m.
Road closed
A Bryant man was involved in a vehicle accident last week during foggy conditions.
On Friday, Keith W. Boone, 38, was driving his 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck north on Indiana 1. He told investigating officers from Wells County he forgot the road was closed that week for construction work, and didn’t see the barricades until it was too late because of the fog. Boone struck the barricades and a parked backhoe belonging to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which was not damaged.
Estimated damage in the 7:50 a.m. accident is estimated to be more than $1,000.
