Backing accident 

Two Jay County residents were involved in a vehicle collision Thursday afternoon. 

Amanda D. Barger, 30, Dunkirk, was backing out of a driveway in the alley between Race and Arch streets. As Barger was backing up the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado she was driving, she struck Betty J. Williamson’s 2004 Cadillac Deville. Williamson was driving west in the alley. 

The Silverado is registered to Jeremiah J. Landers, Pennville.  

Damage in the 12:43 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500. 

Deer struck 

An Ohio woman struck a deer with the truck she was driving early Saturday, causing an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 in damage. 

Kathleen L. Erbaugh, 44, Saint Marys, Ohio, was driving west on county road 600 South near its intersection with county road 1000 West when a deer ran out into the road. She was unable to avoid striking it with the 2018 Ford Ranger she was driving. 

The truck is registered to D. Vogel Enterprises, Saint Marys, Ohio. 

The accident occurred at 12:15 a.m. 



Three vehicle collision 

Three area residents were involved in a chain reaction vehicle collision Sunday afternoon. 

Austin R. Butcher, 23, Portland, was driving south on U.S. 27 near its intersection with county road 800 North. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he didn’t see Johnathon E. Costello, 25, Geneva, who had stopped ahead of him. Butcher’s vehicle collided with Costello’s 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, which then struck the back of a trailer being towed by Lori A. McIntosh, 54, Portland. 

McIntosh was driving her 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. Butcher was driving a 2006 Saturn Ion III, registered to Eric R. Butcher, Portland. 

Damage in the 2:55 p.m. collision is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000. 



Pole struck

A Portland teen struck a utility pole early Sunday morning when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. 

Caleb Kunkle, 19, was driving his 2015 Chrysler 200 east on county road 200 South just past its intersection with county road 300 East. He told Jay County Sheriff’s Office a deer ran out into the road, so he swerved to avoid it. His Chrysler went off the north side of the road and struck an American Electric Power pole. 

Damage in the 12:45 a.m. accident is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000. 



Walmart theft 

A Dunkirk woman was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly stealing from Walmart. 

Jalea Y. Moore, 56, 606 N. Main St., was arrested on the preliminary charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor. According to a Portland Police Department report, she allegedly attempted to steal $45 worth of merchandise from the store at 950 W. Votaw St., Portland.

She was booked at 5:58 p.m. into Jay County Jail and was released on a $1,000 bond. 



OWI 

A Portland man was arrested for driving while intoxicated after his vehicle hit another car Sunday morning. 

Ausencio Navarro-Monjaraz, 22, 406 W. Main St., was driving his 2006 BMW west on Main Street between its intersections with Commerce and Ship streets. He struck David J. Bye’s Nissan Altima, which was in a parking spot on the north side of Main Street. Bye, 48, is from Greenwood. 

Navarro-Monjaraz was arrested on the preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor, and failure to stop after an accident, a Class B misdemeanor. 

He was booked at 4:45 a.m. into Jay County Jail and is being held there on a $1,500 bond.
