MONROEVILLE — Jay County was just figuring out the type of team it would be the last time it played Heritage.
Jay County got swept by Heritage in the championship match of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament way back on Aug. 11, the first action either team saw this season.
Thursday night they squared off again, once again at Heritage, and once again for the conference title.
This time, the visitors got a bit of revenge.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team held off host Heritage on Thursday for a 26-24, 27-25, 25-20 sweep to claim the regular-season ACAC title.
It was the first conference championship since 2015 for Jay County (20-6, 6-0 ACAC), which has now won eight straight league matches.
Sophomore Natalie Miles led a balanced JCHS attack with seven kills, while Alana Kunkler chipped in six kills, Hallie Fields totaled five and Madison Dirksen and Olivia Kunkler both contributed four.
The Kunkler sisters led the defense with five blocks apiece, and Sara Hemmelgarn tallied four blocks. Kailee Denney recorded assists on 15 of the Patriots’ 31 kills.

They’ve won them all.
Brinnin Wasson scored the lone goal Thursday, lifting the Jay County boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Liberty Christian.
Wasson’s tally came in the first half on an assist from Korbin Auker.
The last loss for Jay County (7-6) came Sept. 13 against Bellmont. Since then they’ve beaten Centerville, Blackford, Yorktown, South Adams and now Liberty Christian.
The Patriots close the regular season at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill, and open sectional at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Yorktown at Eastbrook.
Chiefs top Tigers
BLUFFTON — East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both defeated the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday.
The eighth graders won 18-25, 25-13, 15-13, while the seventh grade squad picked up a 25-12, 25-18 victory.
Madison Brunswick posted team highs in points (13), aces (12) and kills (five) for the EJMS eighth graders (4-9). Lauren Brewster had four aces on her way to nine points, and Gracie Barnett tallied four aces as well.
Sophie Saxman’s three kills led the seventh grade team (8-6), which also got 11 aces and 14 points from Brenna Haines.

GAS CITY — The?East Jay sixth grade volleyball teams knocked off host RJ Baskett on Thursday.
The A team won 25-17, 25-13, and the B?squad got a 25-13, 25-12 victory.
Jaelynn Lykins led the A team with eight points, five aces, four digs and three kills. Laylona Wenk chipped in six points on six aces. Morgan DeHoff and Wenk tallied three digs each.
For the B squad, Alyssa Aker had five service points, as she and Tatianna Willis both had four aces. Maya Shawver added four digs, as Jasmine Esparza and Jordyn Hutzler both recorded three aces.
