FORT RECOVERY — Just two years after he started, Michael Bashore has stepped down.
Bashore resigned as Fort Recovery High School boys basketball coach on Wednesday.
“It is with great sadness that I am resigning my position as head boys basketball coach at Fort Recovery,” Bashore said in a statement released through FRHS interim athletics director Barb Sautbine. “But after sitting down since the end of the season with my family I felt it was the right thing to do.”
His resignation means Fort Recovery is without a coach for both basketball programs after Brian Patch resigned as coach of the girls team on March 12.
“I was shocked,” Sautbine said. “I was quite shocked that he was leaving us.”
Sautbine said Bashore contacted her to set up a meeting. That get-together was Wednesday afternoon, during which he told her he was leaving his position.
Fort Recovery was 26-22 in his two years, including a 15-10 mark and a sectional championship in his first season.
The Indians were 3-6 in Midwest Athletic Conference play both years.
“I want to thank the administration for giving me the chance, the great community of Fort Recovery for welcoming me into their community but mostly the players,” Bashore's statement said. “I enjoyed each and every one of them and wish them nothing but the best going forward.”
Sautbine said the search for Bashore's replacement will begin in the coming days.
Bashore sports a 79-51 record in six seasons. He was 53-39 leading the Greenville Green Wave from 2012 to '16. He stepped away from leading the Green Wave for the 2016-17 season before he was named as the 16th coach in the history of Fort Recovery in May 2017.
