ROCKFORD — A big fifth inning powered the Fort Recovery High School baseball team to an 8-6 win over the host Parkway Panthers in the Midwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Parkway (3-2, 0-1 MAC) scored two runs in the second inning for a 2-1 advantage, and pushed the score to 3-1 in the fourth. Fort Recovery (3-2, 1-0 MAC) pushed across five runs in the fifth for a 6-3 lead it never gave up. The Indians plated two more runs in the sixth before the Panthers’ rally fell short.
Riley Post led the offense with a pair of doubles, and Garrett Faller had a double and two singles while driving in two runs. Ian Homan knocked in two runs on a double and a single, and Joe Homan also had a double and a single. Kody Shinabery doubled for the Tribe, which got RBIs from Riley Will, Cobe Wendel and Regan Martin.
Wendel got the win in relief, throwing 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits. He struck out five and walked three.
Late push sinks FR
FORT RECOVERY — A total of 12 runs over the final three innings resulted in a 16-6 loss for the Fort Recovery softball team against the Parkway Panthers on Thursday.
The Indians (3-2, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored five runs in the fourth inning to grab a 6-4 lead over the Panthers (5-0, 1-0 MAC). But six runs in the fifth inning and three in each of the sixth and seventh put the game out of reach for the home team.
Jackie Homan had two doubles and an RBI for the Indians, who also got a single and two RBIs from Brenna Homan. Chloey Grisez knocked a double and a single, while Lydia Wenning, Rachel Thien and Kim Hart all singled.
Jackie Homan took the loss pitching. In seven innings she surrendered nine earned runs on 16 hits, struck out three and walked three.
Stars blast Falcons
BERNE — For the second time in as many games, the South Adams softball team needed just five innings to get a win, this time an 11-1 win over the Winchester Golden Falcons on Thursday.
Three runs in the first inning, two in the second and four in the third gave the Starfires (2-0) a commanding lead. Winchester broke the shutout in the fourth, and South Adams plated two runs in the home half of the fifth for the run-rule victory.
Jenna Myers, Anna Nussbaum and Taylor Augsburger all hit a double. Myers also had a single and drove in two runs. Augsburger added two singles and a pair of RBIs, and Nussbaum had a single as well. Emilie Hammell knocked two singles and Jade Baker collected a pair of RBIs.
Nussbaum struck out eight hitters, allowed one unearned run and didn’t issue a walk.
Tribe rallies
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team erased an early 4-0 deficit in the first inning on its way to a 12-8 win over the Parkway Panthers.
The Indians chipped away at an early hole, eventually taking an 8-7 lead with a three-run fourth inning. They tacked on three more in the fifth frame for good measure and held off Parkway down the stretch.
Korbin Dues doubled for the Tribe’s only extra-base hit. He added a single and scored twice. Kendrick Wendel drove in three runs on two hits, while Marcus Gaerke also knocked in a pair of runs. Peyton Brunswick and Brock Dues collected two hits each.
Brock Dues also got the victory pitching. He threw five innings of relief, allowing three runs — one earned — on five hits. He walked a pair and struck out six.
Stars rout Cavs
BERNE — The junior varsity baseball team of South Adams scored two runs in all but one inning as it thumped the Coldwater Cavaliers 15-2 in six innings on Thursday.
A six-run fourth inning put the game well out of reach for Coldwater, which was in an 11-0 hole at that point.
Tyler Yoder had a double and a single for the Starfires, who also got three singles off the bat of Kam Yoder. Conner Young, Aaron Timmons, Tommy Herman and Cameron Pogue all had a pair of hits. Colin Subler drove in two runs.
SA JV wins
BERNE — South Adams’ junior varsity softball team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 13-4 win over Winchester on Thursday.
Macy Hirshy and Kaelynn Miller led the offense with two hits each, and Lilly Patterson finished with one hit and two RBIs.
Carlie Sealscott, MaKayla Hamrick and Haley Armstrong each had singles.
