MONROE — Jay County High School’s boys and girls track teams both finished second on Thursday in a three-team meet at Adams Central.
Bellmont won both meets, taking the girls’ competition with 90 points. Jay County totaled 60 for second and Adams Central was third with 26 points.
The Bellmont boys scored 78 points for first, with Jay County (51) second and Adams Central (27) third.
Calli Stigleman and Hallie Fields each finished first for the JCHS girls. Stigleman won the 200-yard dash while Fields took the top spot in high jump.
Sophia Fugiett, Lindy Wood, Ashlyn Dow and Cheyenne Liette combined to win the 4x800 relay, and the 4x100 relay team of Shea Bailey, Karlie Bullard, Renee Omstead and Stigleman was also victorious.
Noah Harris (110 hurdles), Aaron Funkhouser (400 dash), Isaac Robbins (300 hurdles) and Gavin Randall (high jump) all got individual wins for the JCHS boys.
Trey Castillo, Nathanael Day, Caleb Webster and Randall teamed for a win in the 4x100 relay.
Softball drops opener
Jay County’s softball team lost its season opener 5-0 to the Delta Eagles on Thursday.
The Eagles, a sectional rival of the Patriots (0-1), scored once in the first inning and added two more in the second to grab the lead. Delta tacked on with one more run in the fifth and seventh innings.
Kensey Litton, Hannah Phillips and Aubrie Schwieterman combined for the Patriots’ four hits on the day. Kailee Denney suffered the loss pitching for Jay County, which hosts former sectional foe Huntington North on Monday.
Tennis shut out
DECATUR — Lyric Garringer had the best chance at a win but she came up short as the Jay County girls tennis team fell to host Bellmont on Thursday, 5-0.
Garringer, playing out of the No. 3 singles position, dropped her match 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Dawn Minnick fell 6-3, 6-3, and Teresa Romero lost 6-1, 6-1 in her No. 1 singles match.
The No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Ruiz and Janae Kirby lost 6-0, 6-1, while Ella Roessner and Ashlynn May dropped their No. 2 singles contest 6-4, 6-3.
All seven Patriot players were making their varsity debut.
Patriot JV wins
MIDDLETOWN — A six-run third inning carried over into another six runs in the fourth as the Jay County junior varsity baseball team pulled away for a 16-12 win over host Shenandoah on Thursday.
Gavin Myers and Kess McBride both had a double and two singles with three RBIs to lead the Patriots (1-0). Drew Powers chipped in three singles and two RBIs, while Logan McGinnis collected a double and a single.
Darius Esparza added two hits and an RBI.
Crosby Heniser was credited with the win. He gave up six runs — one earned — on three hits.
Jay JV blanked
REDKEY — The Jay County junior varsity softball team was blanked in its season opener on Thursday, 10-0 in six innings by the Delta Eagles at Redkey Park.
The Patriots (0-1) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and had the deficit grow to 5-0 as the Eagles scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings.
Jay County struggled in the field as it committed nine errors. The defensive mishaps allowed Delta to score five runs in the sixth inning, meanwhile the Patriot offense only managed three hits.
Trinity Current, Lexi Ferguson and Kristen Wendel all had hits for JCHS.
