When the Cavs jumped out front again in the top of the seventh, the fireworks had already burned out.
Jay County High School’s baseball team wasn’t able to rally in its final at-bat on Monday in a 3-2 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
Coldwater (6-3), which was Ohio’s Division III state runner-up a year ago, took its first lead with an unearned run off JCHS pitcher Isaac Moeller. In the home half of the fifth, Schlechty hit the first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field as Jay County (2-1) went out front 2-1.
After three walks off reliever Wyatt Geesaman, Coldwater’s Jake Hemmelgarn hit a two-run single for the final runs of the game.
Gabe Faulkner finished with two hits for the Patriots, who also got singles from Daniel Fugiett, Quinn Faulkner and Moeller.
In five innings of work, Moeller scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked four. Geesaman gave up two runs on one hit, walked three and struck out four in two innings of relief to take the loss.
Wenning leads Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — Lydia Wenning had three hits and knocked in four runs in leading the Fort Recovery softball team to a five-inning, 12-2 win over the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders on Monday.
The Indians (5-4) nabbed a one-run lead in the first inning and never gave it up. A four-run second pushed the score to 5-0 before the Roughriders struck for two runs in the fourth frame. But in the home half of the stanza, Fort Recovery added three runs and put the game away with four runs in the fifth for the run-rule victory.
Jackie Homan had two doubles and a pair of singles in support of Wenning. Hannah Knapke doubled and singled, and Macy Day collected two hits as well.
Brenna Homan, Chloey Grisez, Rachel Thien, Kim Hart, Jackie Homan and Day all had RBIs.
Big first lifts Jay
BERNE — Jay County’s junior varsity softball team scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings over South Adams.
Kristen Wendel had three singles and drove in four runs for the Patriots (1-1). Maddy Rinker doubled and singled, while Breanna Randall finished with a double and three RBIs. Lexi Ferguson also doubled and knocked in a pair of runs.
Carlie Sealscott doubled as the only hit for the Starfires.
Pacie Denney threw 2 2/3 innings before exiting with an injury. She didn’t allow a hit, gave up one unearned run and struck out one.
MaKayla Hamrick suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs — one earned — with six walks and two strikeouts.
Patriots shut out
COLDWATER — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team managed five hits but wasn’t able to push across a run in a 10-0 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers in six innings on Monday.
The Cavaliers jumped out front 2-0 in the first inning before adding four in the third and three in the fourth. They scored once in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off, run-rule victory.
Logan McGinnis had two hits for Jay County (0-2), which also got a double from Gavin Myers. Juan Pablo Wiggins and Darius Esparza also singled for the Patriots.
FR girls win
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery Middle School’s girls track team finished first in a four-team meet it hosted on Monday.
The Indians totaled 90.5 points, with Houston (65.5) and Bradford (33) second and third, respectively.
Fort Recovery’s boys were second with 45 points. Houston won with 99 points, and Bradford placed third with 36 points.
Audra Bubp, Sophie Pearson and Allysen Fullenkamp joined Joscie LeFevre to win the 4x100-meter relay, and they teamed with Ella Westgerdes to take first in the 4x200 relay. The 4x400 relay team of Abby Knapke, Natalie Brunswick, Megan Diller and Alexis Wendel also finished first.
Earning individual wins for the FRMS girls were Pearson (100 dash), Fullenkamp (200 dash) and Brunswick (800 run).
Bo Thien had the top spot in shot put and discus for the FRMS boys. The 4x200 relay team of Chase Kaiser, Carson Siefring, Lyndon Brinkerhoff and Ross Pearson was victorious, as well as Alex Hiser, Luke McCain, Zane Shauver and Brinkerhoff in the 4x100 relay.
