SELMA — Devin Harris had a career night.

The Raiders all had stellar days.

Harris set a new career-low score but the Jay County High School boys golf team fell to the host Wapahani Raiders, 158-207, on Thursday at Cardinal Hills Golf Course.

Harris, a junior, made par twice on his way to a 49, which was second on the team for the Patriots.

Griffin Mann’s 48 led Jay County (0-2). Kyle Sanders shot 51 for third on the team, and Seth Wilson’s 58 was also a career best score to complete the Patriots’ team total.

Evan Galbreth of Wapahani earned match medalist honors with a 3-over-par 38. Teammates Nick Wilson and Caleb Wright were each one stroke behind.

Brothers Joey Hall, a senior, and Matthew Hall, a freshman, also competed for Jay County but their scores did not factor into the team total. Joey carded a 59 to edge his brother by one stroke.



FR track second

ROCKFORD — Fort Recovery’s boys and girls track teams both placed second on Thursday in a quad meet at Parkway.

Coldwater won the girls meet with 121 points, and the Indians totaled 54 points for second. Parkway (41) and Crestview (32) were third and fourth respectively.

The boys meet had the same order of finishes. Coldwater totaled 71.5 points, 3.5 ahead of Fort Recovery. Parkway finished with 54.5 points to edge Crestview by a half point.

Chloe Will won the 3,200 run for the FRHS girls, and joined Kierra Wendel, Anna Wendel and Cassy Martin for a victory in the 4x800 relay.

Whitley Rammel was first in shot put.

Riley Pearson (110 hurdles), Drew Muhlenkamp (800 run), Robby LeFevre (200 run) and Jared Timmerman (long jump) all got individual wins.



Tennis falls to Tigers

BLUFFTON — The Jay County girls tennis team lost its Allen County Athletic Conference opener on Thursday, 3-2 to the Bluffton Tigers.

Marie Dirksen got her first varsity victory with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.


Ella Roessner and Ashlynn May got a win at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Jay County’s No. 1 singles player, Teresa Romero, lost 6-0, 6-1, and Sophia Barcus fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Ruiz and Janae Kirby dropped their match, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.



Stars shut out

BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team was shut out in its match with Norwell on Thursday, 5-0.

Hannah Dull lost her No. 1 singles match to Breann Barger 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 2 singles Josie Grabau fell to Ashley VandenBoom 4-6, 6-4 (10-7). Alexa Kinsey lost at No. 3 singles, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, to Dani Gavilanez.

The No. 1 doubles team of Kirsten Herman and Gabi Bailey fell to Ashley Sayyachak and JadeLyn Heyerly-Jones 7-5, 6-0, while Michelle Bois-Donis and Anna Dee dropped their No. 2 doubles match to Jordan Page and Tiana Moser 6-1, 6-0.



FR girls fourth

COLDWATER — Fort Recovery Middle School’s girls track team was fourth in a four-team meet at Coldwater on Thursday.

Minster won with 87 points, 10 ahead of Coldwater. St. Henry (34) and Fort Recovery (30) were third and fourth respectively.

Minster also won the boys meet with 90 points. Coldwater and St. Henry tied for second with 57 points, and Fort Recovery finished with 24 points.

Natalie Brunswick had the lone wins for the FRMS girls, as she beat the competition in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Bo Thien (shot put) and Ross Pearson (200 dash) won events for the FRMS boys.



Middle schoolers win

WINCHESTER — The Jay County middle school golf team opened its season on Thursday with a 132-171, six-hole win over Winchester at Winchester Golf Club.

Caleb DeRome led Jay County with a 6-over par 29, including a birdie on the par-3 second hole. Brock DeHoff was second on the team with 31, two strokes ahead of Kenny Carducci. Patrick Hemmelgarn shot 34 to complete the team score for Jay County.
