Tague died Friday at age 72
Longtime civic leader served 21 years as executive director of chamber of commerce
Vicki Tague, whose civic leadership spanned more than half a dozen local and regional organizations, died Friday afternoon at Indiana University Health Jay Hospital in Portland. She was 72.
Honored by Jay County Chamber of Commerce in 2017 with its Lifetime Achievement Award, she served 21 years as the chamber’s executive director and played the key role in making the chamber a countywide organization.
A past president of Portland Rotary Club, she served as assistant district governor and chair of the district membership committee. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary.
Most recently, she had served as chair of Meridian Health Services, a regional medical group, and on the board of Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie. She also served on the board of the IU Health Jay Hospital Foundation.
A past president of Arts Place, she served two terms on that organization’s board of directors.
Active in Republican politics, she had served on Portland City Council and as county auditor. She had chaired Portland Planning and Zoning Commission and the city’s board of zoning appeals. She was involved in numerous city and county strategic planning committees and served on the board of Jay County Development Corporation.
For the past three years, she co-chaired the United Way of Jay County’s annual campaign. She also co-chaired the torch relay as part of the Indiana Bicentennial celebration in 2016 and assisted with the Portland Water Park fundraising campaign. She also served on the Purdue Extension Board.

A lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland, she had chaired the church council and served as office administrator for 20 years. She had also served as the church’s director of education and as a Sunday School teacher.
Born Sept. 4, 1946, she was the daughter of Joseph and Imogene (Ruth) Grisell. She was married on Sept. 23, 1967, to Charles Tague, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Tague, Churubusco, and two granddaughters.
She was a 1964 graduate of Portland High School and attended Indiana University. She was a graduate of Ball State University courses in economic and community development.
When honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, she said, “The wonderful thing about having lived so many years and being able to be involved is you have the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people who really love Jay County. And it’s been an honor to work with those folks in so many different ways.”
A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later date.
