CELINA, Ohio — One invitational and three dual meets into the season, the Patriots got their first win of the year.
Jay County High School’s boys golf team finished second in a three-team match on Tuesday at Celina Lynx.
Adams Central took first with a score of 184, and Jay County shot 207 for second. South Adams placed third with 217. The 1-1 mark on the night was the first victory for first-year Jay County coach Ryan Steinbrenner.
Griffin Mann and Kyle Sanders led Jay County by both shooting in the 40s. Mann made par twice — the par-5 second and par-3 seventh holes — for a team-best 45. Sanders shot a career-low 49 for second on the team.
Seth Wilson and Devin Harris carded scores of 56 and 57 respectively for Jay County.
Alex Sator shot 50 to lead South Adams, and Blayne Harruff was one stroke behind. Spencer Fear (56) and Josh Hofstetler (60) were third and fourth respectively.
Seniors pace Tribe
FORT RECOVERY — Robby LeFevre and Chloe Will both won multiple events for their respective Fort Recovery track teams as the Indians hosted Fort Loramie and Anna.
The FRHS boys scored 52 points for second, behind Fort Loramie (80) and ahead of Anna (47). Fort Loramie totaled 80 points to take the girls meet as well, and Anna scored 48 points to edge the host Indians.
LeFevre won the 100-meter dash, the 200 dash and the 300 hurdle races. Also earning wins for the FRHS boys were Drew Muhlenkamp (800 run), Riley Pearson (110 hurdles), Brayden Schoen (high jump) and Jared Timmerman (long jump). Pearson, Schoen, Timmerman and Muhlenkamp were the winners in the 4x200 relay.
Will beat the competition in the 1,600 run and 3,200 run. Abbie Francis (100 dash), Anna Wendel (800 run) and Whitley Rammel (shot put) each won individual events as well.
Tennis beats Indians
Jay County’s girls tennis team picked up a 3-2 win over sectional rival Union City on Tuesday.
The victory snapped a four-match losing streak for the Patriots.
Grace Brewster had the Patriots’ lone singles win as she swept her No. 3 singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Janae Kirby and Sofia Barcus dropped their first set but rallied for a three-set win, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3. Holly Hemmelgarn and Lilly Hedges made their varsity debut at No. 2 doubles and picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Dawn Minnick dropped her No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4, and Lyric Garringer fell at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Stars top Tigers
BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team stayed perfect in Allen County Athletic Conference play Tuesday with a 3-2 win over the Bluffton Tigers.
Alexa Kinsey at No. 3 singles got a 6-4, 6-4 win over Monroe Heller for the Starfires (3-3, 2-0 ACAC).
Kirsten Herman and Gabi Bailey picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jorie Steffen at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Claire Burson and Anna Dee defeated Emily Mann and Emilee Irwin by the same margin.
Eagles third
WOODBURN — The West Jay Middle School track teams both finished third in a three-team meet on Tuesday at Woodlan.
The host Warriors finished with 66 points to take the boys meet, with Southern Wells (42) second and West Jay (29) third.
A score of 61.5 points was good enough for Woodlan to win the girls meet as well. Southern Wells scored 40.5 for second and West Jay totaled 26 points.
Gabi Bilbrey was first in both the shot put and discus events for the WJMS girls.
