MONROEVILLE — Jenna Myers put the Starfires on top in the game’s first inning.

Anna Nussbaum did the rest.

Nussbaum threw a no-hitter, leading the South Adams High School softball team to a 2-0 victory over Allen County Athletic Conference rival Heritage Patriots on Tuesday.

The win improved the Starfires, who are tied for ninth in the Class 2A poll, to 11-1 (2-0 ACAC) on the season.

After Myers put South Adams out front with a steal of home in the game’s first inning, Nussbaum went to work. She retired four straight batters before losing her bid for a perfect game with a one-out walk in the second inning. She then sat down 16 straight Patriots before a two-out error put a Heritage runner at first base in the seventh inning. A fly out to Kayla LeFever in center field ended the game.

Nussbaum, who also had a double and scored the insurance run in the top of the seventh frame, struck out nine.

Kristen Wynn drove in Nussbaum on a single, and Emilie Hammell recorded a double.

Tribe thumps Flyers

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s softball team thumped conference rival Marion Local to the tune of a 10-1 victory on Tuesday.

The Indians (10-9, 2-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) pounced on the Flyers (5-10, 1-4 MAC) with three runs in the first inning and took a 6-1 lead after the second. A run in each of the next two frames pushed the advantage to 8-1, and the Indians scored twice in the sixth to create even more separation.

Hannah Knapke doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs while Jackie Homan doubled, singled and knocked in a run. Lydia Wenning collected four RBIs on two hits, while Brenna Homan chipped in two hits as well.

Jackie Homan allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings of work. She struck out 10 and didn’t issue a walk.

Patriots walk off

The Jay County softball team moved to .500 on the season Tuesday with a walk-off, 4-3 victory against the New Castle Trojans.

The Patriots (5-5) saw their 3-1 lead turn into a tie game during the top of the fourth inning to set the stage for the late-inning heroics. Maggie Pryor, a senior, knocked in Hailey Gillette with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off win.

Kensey Litton collected a hit and two stolen bases, while Kailee Denney contributed a single and an RBI. Hannah Phillips had the other hit for Jay County.
