Rear-ended
A Portland man and a Selma woman were involved in a vehicle collision Monday.
Dylan M. McKibben, 24, was driving his 2007 Mazda 3 north on Indiana 67 and began slowing to turn left onto county road 200 West. Reta M. Guffey, 56, who was driving her 2010 Dodge Caravan behind McKibben, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she didn’t see his brake lights. Guffey attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision but struck the rear of McKibben’s vehicle.
Damage in the 5:10 p.m. accident is estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Drove off road
A Kokomo man drove his car off the road Saturday afternoon, causing an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 in damage.
Ramses T. Miller, 23, was driving east on county road 200 South when north side of the road at its intersection with county road 800 West. His 1999 Cadillac Eldorado struck a private cemetery sign and then entered a field.
The accident occurred at 3:30 p.m.
Turning accident
Two Jay County residents were involved in a vehicle collision Tuesday morning.
Heather R. Morgan, 33, Bryant, was driving north on U.S. 27 and was preparing to turn right onto county road 200 North. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was turning from the straight-through lane to give the 2012 Ford Econline E-450 bus she was driving room to make the turn. Anthony S. Elwood, 58, Portland, was driving a 2012 Ford Econline E350 van behind Morgan. He said he thought Morgan was turning left onto county road 200 north, so he went around the bus in the right-hand turn lane. The bus Morgan was driving then struck the driver’s side of the van.
The bus is registered to Sherry L. May, Farmland. The van driven by Elwood is registered to MVCO Inc., Portland.
Damage in the 7:06 a.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Criminal mischief
A Portland woman reported damage to her home Tuesday.
Sarah Crago, who lives in the east 400 block of Main Street, told Portland Police Department someone had tried to break into her apartment. She said the windows had been tampered with. Police are continuing to investigate.
Backing accident
A Portland man hit a building while backing a car into a driveway Tuesday.
Richard E. Thompson, 73, was backing a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic into a driveway at St. Myers Auto Service, 8602 W. 400 South, Redkey. He struck a building, causing an estimated $1,000 to $2,500 in damage.
The Chevrolet is registered to Gelco Fleet Trust, Sparks Glencoe, Maryland.
The collision occurred at 12:52 p.m.
Deer collision
A Portland woman’s van was struck by a deer Tuesday morning.
Carri A. Hartzell, 38, was driving north on county road 600 East near its intersection with county road 200 North when a deer ran into the passenger side of her 2015 Toyota Sienna.
Damage in the 11:20 a.m. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Vehicle fire
Portland Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire Tuesday at the Jay County Highway Department garage.
A skid loader’s engine caught fire at the garage, located at 1035 E. 200 North, Portland. It was extinguished quickly.
