FORT WAYNE and BERNE — A day after whooping conference rival Heritage, the South Adams High School junior varsity softball team lost to the host Carroll Chargers on Wednesday, 8-6.
South Adams (5-3) scored one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, the last of which tied the game with the Chargers at 3-3. The Starfires jumped out front, 6-3, in the top of the sixth, but Carroll responded with five runs in the home half of the frame for an 8-6 advantage.
The Starfires weren’t able to get back out front again in the top of the seventh.
Megan Miller and Carlie Sealscott both had RBIs for the Starfires. Mallory Hirschy, Taylor Braun, Vivian O’Dell and Dominga Guerra each had singles.
Miller took the loss, allowing eight runs — four earned — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out four and walked five.
On Tuesday at home against Allen County Athletic Conference rival Heritage Patriots, the Starfires needed just five innings for a 14-4 win.
Sealscott hit her first home run of the season and drove in a team-high three RBIs. Braun finished with two doubles and two RBIs, while Kaelynn Miller doubled and singled as well. Poppi Lenwell collected a double and an RBI.
Kaelynn Miller, Braun and O’Dell drove in a pair of runs apiece.
Sealscott earned the win pitching. She surrendered four runs — three earned — on six hits over five innings with four strikeouts and just as many walks.
Chiefs lose to Eagles
MUNCIE — The East Jay Middle School boys and girls track teams both lost to the host Delta Eagles on Tuesday.
The EJMS girls fell by a 72-28 score, while the Chief boys dropped a 72-27 margin.
Lydia Keihn and Chelsea Frantz won discus and shot put, respectively, as the only victories for East Jay’s girls.
Placing second were Sophie Saxman (400-meter dash), Cash Hollowell (long jump) and Keihn (1,600 run and 800 run).
East Jay’s boys got wins from Joseph Kunk in discus and Isaac Kunkler in high jump. The 4x100 relay team of Owen Ransom, Grayson Williams, Allen Dues and William Ramseyer had the top spot.
Ransom was also runner-up in the 100 and 200 dash races.
