MUNCIE — Grace Saxman and Halle Hill each had one individual victory.

They made up half of another, and were part of the team champions.

Jay County High School’s girls track team claimed the trophy on Saturday in the Bearcat Invitational at Muncie Central.

The Patriots totaled 155.3 points for the title, with sectional rival Delta (145.3 points) as the runner-up. Anderson finished third out of five teams with 115 points.

Saxman beat the competition in the 100-meter hurdles, and Hill was first in the 400 dash. They teamed with Kinsey Shannon and Renee Omstead for a victory in the 4x400 relay.

Sophia Fugiett, Lindy Wood, Raven Weaver and Cheyenne Liette picked up a win in the 4x800 relay.

Finishing second were Abby Benter (100 hurdles), Shannon (100 dash), Wood (3,200 run), Kendal Garringer (high jump) and the 4x100 meter relay team (Shea Bailey, Calli Stigleman, Karlie Bullard and Omstead).



Patriots take two

MUNCIE — The Jay County baseball team swept the Muncie Central Bearcats on Saturday.

The Patriots, who moved to 9-2 on the season, won the first game 10-0 in six innings before a 9-1 triumph in game two.

Daniel Fugiett led Jay County with five hits, and he also had three RBIs and scored three runs. Noah Arbuckle hit his second home run of the season as one of his three hits. He also drove in four runs.

Cameron Henry collected a double and two singles, while Michael Schlechty, Gabe Faulkner and Quinn Faulkner had three hits each.

Arbuckle scattered two hits over six innings to get the win in game one. He struck out eight and walked one. Isaac Moeller struck out 10, gave up one run on five hits and issued one walk in game two for the victory.



Mann ties for 13th

WINCHESTER — Griffin Mann shot a career-low on Saturday to finish tied for 13th for the Jay County boys golf team in the Winchester Invitational at Winchester Golf Club.

Union County won the 13-team tournament with its score of 316, edging Muncie Central with the fifth-golfer tiebreaker by one stroke. Northeastern totaled 327 for third. Jay County had a team score of 399.

Mann, a sophomore, began his round with pars on four of his first five holes. He was 3-over at the turn before going birdie, par, par on holes 10 through 12. Mann turned in a career-best 81 to lead the Patriots.

Kyle Sanders scored in double digits for the first time in his career as he was second with 96. Devin Harris (102) and Joey Hall (120) also contributed to the team score.

Matthew Hall shot 125, but did not factor into the team total.

Tyler Walker of Muncie Central and Alex Beatty of Northeastern shared medalist honors with 1-over-par 73.



Jay boys fifth

NEW CASTLE — Gavin Randall picked up two wins on Friday as the Jay County boys track team placed fifth in the New Castle Invitational.

Anderson won with 107 points, edging Connersville by four points. Jay County finished with 63 points.

Randall got victories in both the high jump and long jump events.

Isaac Robbins had the other lone win for Jay County, taking the top spot in the 110-meter hurdles. He was also runner-up in the 300 hurdles.

The 4x100 relay team of Trey Castillo, Nathanael Day, Caleb Webster and Randall placed second as well.
