MIDLAND, Mich. — In their previous eight road games, the TinCaps came out on the losing end.
They fell behind again Thursday despite scoring three runs in the first inning.
A five-run fifth inning swung the game back in their favor and they held off a rally to end their misfortunes away from home.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps snapped a road losing skid on Thursday by hanging on to beat the Great Lakes Loons 10-9 at Dow Diamond.
It was the TinCaps’ first win away from Parkview Field since July 12.
After opening the game with a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Fort Wayne (14-25 second half, 47-60 overall) fell behind as Great Lakes (24-15, 67-39) tied the game with a three-spot in the second inning and grabbed a 4-3 advantage one frame later.
But the TinCaps, who return to Parkview Field on Saturday for a seven-game homestand, open the score with five runs in the top of the fourth.
Lee Solomon and Jawuan Harris both tallied RBIs ahead of a two-run single from Michael Curry. Justin Lopez completed the scoring in the frame by roping an RBI single to center.
The Loons, an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, got a solo home run from Justin Yurchak in the fourth inning only to have the TinCaps answer the next half stanza on a Luke Becker solo homer.
Great Lakes scored twice in each of the seventh and ninth frames, but a run by Fort Wayne in the top of the eighth was enough to end the TinCaps’ road struggles.
Curry finished his day with three hits and three RBIs. Dwanya Williams-Sutton doubled and singled with two RBIs, and Juan Fernandez totaled a pair of hits as well. Ethan Skender contributed a hit too.
Fort Wayne reliever Adrian Martinez picked up his fifth win of the season. He allowed one earned run on three hits in four innings of work while also striking out four and walking two.
Moises Lugo lasted just two innings in his first start as a TinCap, surrendering four earned runs on three hits.
Fort Wayne can go for a series split with a win tonight. Efraín Contreras (4-5, 4.15 ERA) is the TinCaps’ projected starter.
Jack Little (0-0, 1.26 ERA) takes to the hill for Great Lakes.
