Jay County residents will have the chance to meet and mingle with local law enforcement and first responders next week. 

Portland Police Department will have its National Night Out event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 in the Walmart parking lot, 950 W. Votaw St., Portland. There will be free hot dogs and water along with displays from local organizations for adults and kids. Lutheran Air’s medical helicopter will also make an appearance. 



Camp set

Patriot Prep, a free preschool summer camp led by Youth Service Bureau, will hold a third session near the end of the month.

The camp, which is open to 3- through 5-year-olds, is based on the previous Born To Learn camps and the United Way Kindergarten Countdown program. Children will learn about colors, numbers and letters through hands-on experiences, arts and crafts, songs and games.

The last session will be held Aug. 26 through 30 in Portland. Classes run from 9 a.m. to noon. A parent must attend with their child.

Free admission

From now until Labor Day, Minnetrista, in collaboration with Blue Star Museums, the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, will be offering free admission to active duty military personnel, including those serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserves, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members.

 Those who qualify must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (department ID) or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card to receive free admission.

 Blue Star Families is a national, nonprofit network. Their worldwide membership includes military spouses, children, parents, and friends, as well as service members, veterans and civilians.

Pet event set

Midwest Pet Refuge will holds its Rock N Brew 4 Rescue event beginning at noon Aug. 17 and continuing throughout the day.

The festivities will include a benefit ride to begin at 12:30 p.m. — registration starts at noon — to be followed y a hog roast beginning at 4 p.m. Jonah Keen Band will play from 4 to 7 p.m., and The Breakfast Club, a 1980s tribute band, will take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Registration for the ride is $15, meals will be $6 and advance tickets to the concert are $10.
