Adams celebrates 20 years in business

Roy Adams came to work at Jay County Hospital in 1983. He expected only a temporary stay.
Last week, Adams Physical Therapy celebrated 20 years in business.
Adams’ plans changed after he started dating a nurse at the hospital. They ended up getting married, with Adams halting he plans to move to the South. Instead, he worked in physical therapy in Randolph County while finishing up graduate work.
And then, in 1999, he decided to see if he could make it in owning a private practice.
“Started feeling out the options that were there,” said Adams. “I started seeing some patients at that stage, somewhere at my house and a few in their homes.”
Outgrowing home visits, Adams expanded to a small office space. He continued running his private practice only part time while working in Fort Wayne.
“The first six months, the company didn’t actually pay me. I actually ended up getting paid some from what I did in Fort Wayne and things I did with First Steps,” said Adams. “We only had enough money at first having to … pay our rent, electricity and all that.”
Adams was advised by some to give up the practice and go back to working in a hospital.
As a business, “we didn’t starve,” said Adams.
Eventually, the business began to grow and more clients started to visit. In 2006, the site at 111 W. North St. came up for sale, and the location soon went under construction to become the new home of Adams’ private practice.
With the move came expanding the staff, which now includes another doctor of physical therapy, six physical therapy assistants, one clinical assistant, an athletic trainer and five office staffers.
“When you look at some of the things we have grown too, we’ve went beyond what we are doing locally,” said Adams.
Celebrating 20 years in the business, Adams looks to the future with a partnership with Fyzical Therapy, an organization that provides private practices with business systems, operational support, clinical education and proprietary technology and protocols, and informing the public about the benefits of physical therapy.
