FORT RECOVERY — The Cavaliers ran 33 plays.
A third of them went backward.
Fort Recovery High School’s football team pushed Lehman Catholic around Friday night to the tune of minus-12 yards of total offense for the visitors in a 35-0 shellacking at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.
After going three-and-out on the first drive of the game, the Indians set the tone on defense. It first pushed RJ Bertini backward two yards, then forced a 16-yard loss on an Andrew Barhorst fumble.
The Cavaliers (0-1) had two more negative plays on their second drive on the way to a total of minus-39 yards on the ground. Their pair of passers — Brendan O’Leary and Bertini — completed four passes for 27 yards, but it was not enough to put them in the positive for the evening.
While the FRHS defense, led by Owen Schoen’s 10 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, was stone-walling Lehman Catholic, Clay Schmitz was zipping completion after completion. The junior signal-caller accounted for all five of the Indian touchdowns, including a 24-yard strike to Gavin Thobe in the third quarter for his longest toss of the game. That TD made it 28-0 and put the game well in hand four minutes into the second half.
Schmitz, who finished 20-of-26 (77 percent) through the air, rifled two other touchdowns — 18 yards with 1:38 left in the first half and 14 yards at the 6-minute mark of the third quarter — to Thobe. He also opened the scoring with a 12-yard TD pass to Riley Pearson late in the opening period and hit Regan Martin for a 7-yard score in the waning moments of the first half.
Martin caught eight passes for 112 yards, including a 24-yard toss to match Thobe’s touchdown for the longest reception of the night. Thobe racked up 103 yards on six receptions for Fort Recovery (1-0).
Derek Jutte led the rushing attack with 58 yards on nine attempts, and Owen Moorman totaled 45 yards, including a 27-yard jaunt on the first drive of the fourth quarter.
The Indians will look to move to 2-0 next week as they hit the road to take on Valley View, which cruised to a 41-7 victory Friday over Wilmington.
