Theft investigation

Jay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a theft at Jay County Retirement Center.

Eleven 32-inch HDTVs were stolen from the center’s storage room between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, when the theft was reported to the police by Hope Confer, the center’s director.

Confer said other small items have been missing from the center throughout the past week, including a blood pressure cuff, a TV antenna and two rolls of sausage. Police are continuing to investigate.



Driver charged

A Winchester woman was charged Tuesda with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor, following a single-vehicle traffic accident south of Portland.

Melinda S. Hinshaw, 51, 437 E Thompson St., Winchester, said wind caused by a semi caused her vehicle to slide off the icy road and into a telephone pole. The accident was preceded by Hinshaw attempting to pass the semi before sliding off the east side of the road.

The responding officers did not see any ice, snow or debris on the road, a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report said. Officers administered a breathalyzer test, which a police report indicates came back at 0.14, which is above the legal limit of 0.08.

Damage in the accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500. She was released from Jay County Jail on $1,000 bond.



Deer hit


Theresa M. Kremer was unable to avoid hitting a deer while traveling south on State Line Road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday near county road 500 South and the state border.

Kremer’s 2015 Chrysler Town & Country minivan is estimated to have between $5,000 to $10,000 worth of damages. She was not injured.

A vehicle collided with a deer Wednesday after it ran into the intersection of U.S. 27 and county road 450 South. An officer responded at 7:35 a.m. to Brian J. Ketcham, 37, Portland, his damaged 2013 Hyundai Elantra and an incapacitated deer. Damage was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Truck struck

Matt L. White, 48, Portland, said ice caused the Jay County dump truck he was driving to slide past a stop sign at county road 300 North and State Line Road. at 10:35 a.m. Thursday, hitting a Weaver Eggs semi that was driving accross the border toward Ohio.

The dump truck, which was registered to Jay County Commissioners, was not damaged. The semi driven by Rickie L. Yoder, Versailles, Ohio, recieved a damage estimate of $10,000 to $25,000. Neither driver was injured.



Slide off

Madison M. Evans, 18, Portland, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that ice caused her 2006 Honda CRV to slide off the road and into a telephone pole at the intersection of county road 200 South and county road 500 East at 2:50 p.m. Thursday near Portland.

Damage was estimated to be between $2,500 and $5,000. She was not injured.
