FORT RECOVERY — The Indians trailed by a dozen in the fourth quarter.
And with 1:26 to play they were behind by nine.
Alli Vaughn nailed a 3-pointer to swing the game in the Tribe’s favor as the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team scored the final 15 points to rally past the New Bremen Cardinals for a 42-39 victory in the regular-season finale on Thursday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
The Indians (11-11, 3-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) were down 39-27 in the fourth period before Vaughn made her only triple of the game to bring the margin to single digits. Kierra Wendel, who had a team-high 12 points, followed with a field goal and Brooke Kahlig hit the first of her two 3-pointers. The lead for New Bremen (14-8, 4-5 MAC) was just four points before another Kahlig trey cut the FRHS deficit to 39-38.
A pair of Wendel free throws gave the Indians the lead, and Vaughn followed with two foul shots for the final points of the game.
Vaughn was second to Wendel with 11 points, and Kahlig finished with eight. Val Muhlenkamp chipped in seven points.
Fort Recovery opens Division IV tournament action as it plays either Lima Central Catholic or Mt. Victory Ridgemont in the sectional final at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 23 at Coldwater.
Schlechty an All-Star
Jay County senior Michael Schlechty was named a Region 5 All-Star on Friday by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 246-pound senior was selected for an at-large offensive position. As a fullback for the Patriots (4-6), Schlechty led the team in carries (90), rushing yards (667) and rushing touchdowns (eight).
He also caught 10 passes out of the backfield for 46 yards.
As an All-Star, Schlechty will be in consideration along with the other four regions for the North Team in the North-South All-Star Game.
Chiefs trounce Titans
MUNCIE — East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team trounced the Muncie Northside Titans on Thursday, 88-12.
Brayden Daniels (85 pounds), AJ Myers (125), Grayson Williams (130), Reed Brandenburg (135), Nate Paxson (140), Tristan Stout (145), Bryce Wenk (160) and Conner Specht (175) each got pins to win their respective matches for the Chiefs.
Cody Rowles got a 9-1 major decision in his 100-pound bout, and Landon Blowers picked up a 15-3 major decision at 105 pounds.
Landon Garringer (75), Griffin Byrum (80), Tony Wood (90), Carter Barton (95), Carter Link (110), Mallory Winner (115) and Cameron Clark (120) all picked up forfeits.
In reserve action, Presley Kunkle, Sebastian Jones, Zac Brotherton, Clark, Winner and Wood each won by fall.
Orso undefeated
UNION CITY — Logan Orso went undefeated on Thursday as the West Jay wrestling team was 1-2 in a quad meet at Union City.
The Eagles (1-3) lost to Union City 50-15 and Winchester Driver 42-24, but knocked off Richmond 30-24.
Orso didn’t lose a match on the night at 110 pounds. Reece Gross (125) and Landon Weaver (275) both finished with 2-1 records. Caleb Dollar (95), Caleb Weesner (102) and Zander Conatser (175) were all 1-2 on the day.
Aidan Pierce was winless in three tries at 80 pounds.
SA girls top Burris
BERNE — South Adams Middle School’s girls swim team defeated the Burris Owls on Thursday, 111-50.
The SAMS boys fell 122-29.
Delaney Dunnuck and Maggie Nussbaum each had two individual wins for the Starfire girls. Dunnuck was first in the 200-yard freestyle and 400 freestyle, while Nussbaum beat the field in the 100 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
Chloe Summersett (50 freestyle) and Addisyn Hunley (100 backstroke) also got individual wins.
Meredith Colpaert, Hunley, Nussbaum and Summersett teamed to win the 200 medley relay, and Piper Akins, Ava Kinsey, Julia Arnold and Stella McIntire combined for a victory in the 300 freestyle relay.
