CANTON, Ohio — Cassy Martin’s time in the pool ended on Thursday at the state’s highest level.
Martin, a Fort Recovery High School senior, had her swim career come to a close in the OHSAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
The two-time state qualifier competed in one event, the 50-yard freestyle, and finished 22nd in Thursday’s preliminaries.
Seeded 19th entering the meet at 24.53 seconds, Martin wasn’t able to go faster during the preliminaries. She had a time of 24.98 seconds, a mere 0.43 seconds away from the No. 16 spot and the consolation final.
The top eight earn spots in the championship heat, with places nine through 16 competing in the consolation final as the meet continues at 5 p.m. tonight.
Ben Logan senior Macy Arn earned the final spot in the consolation race.
Sophomore Nya Funderburke of Columbus School for Girls is the top seed at 23.55 seconds.
Chiefs win two
WOODBURN — East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team defeated West Jay and host Woodlan on Thursday to push its record to 9-3 on the year.
The Chiefs beat West Jay 94-0, and knocked off the Warriors 81-18.
Against West Jay, Griffin Byrum (80 pounds), Tony Wood (90), Cody Rowles (95), AJ Myers (125), Conner Specht (174) and Ricky Nava (275) won their respective matches with pins. Landon Blowers earned an 11-0 major decision at 102 pounds.
Landon Garringer, Bradin Daniels, Carter Link, Cameron Clark, Reed Brandenburg, Nate Paxson, Tristan Stout, Bryce Wenk and Adryon Miller all received forfeits.
In East Jay’s bout against Woodlan, Garringer (75), Wood, Myers, Brandenburg, Paxson and Miller pinned their opponents, while Clark picked up a 5-1 decision.
Daniels, Rowles, Blowers, Link, Stout and Wenk got forfeit wins.
Dakota Chowning, Grayson Williams, Sebastian Jones, Lauren Pruett, Layne Reidt and Link each had victories in reserve action with the Warriors.
Results for West Jay’s match with Woodlan were not provided.
Stars, Jets split
MONROE — South Adams Middle School’s swim teams split with the host Adams Central Jets on Thursday.
The Starfires won the girls meet, 148-141, and the Jets had a 79-34 edge in the boys competition.
Delaney Dunnuck, Maggie Nussbaum and Chloe Summersett each won two events for the Starfire girls. Dunnuck was first in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle races. Nussbaum won the 100 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke while Summersett touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Addisyn Hunley was also victorious in the 100 backstroke. The Starfires’ 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams got wins as well.
Blaine Duff (50 butterfly) and Nathaniel White (100 backstroke) had the only two wins for the SAMS boys.
Registration is Saturday
REDKEY — The Redkey Junior League will have baseball and softball registration for the 2019 season on Saturday.
The session will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Redkey Fire Station, 400 W. Railroad St.
