BLUFFTON — For the fifth straight season, the Patriots are champions.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team secured the Allen County Athletic Conference regular-season championship on Friday with a 48-29 win over the Bluffton Tigers.
It gives the Patriots (9-7, 5-0 ACAC) back-to-back solo titles after earning a share with South Adams during the 2016-17 season.
Jay County doubled-up the Tigers (8-7, 3-2 ACAC) in the first quarter to the tune of 12-6 before grabbing a 23-16 advantage at halftime.
A 16-point effort in the third quarter allowed the Patriots to get out front 39-20 before putting away the Tigers in the fourth quarter for their 13th consecutive regular-season win against ACAC opponents.
Shelby Caldwell and Hanna Dillon led Jay County, which opens ACAC tournament play on Tuesday at Adams Central, with a dozen points respectively, and Kendra Muhlenkamp hauled in 10 rebounds.
Jay County’s junior varsity team dipped to 9-7 on the year with a 31-29 loss. Grace Saxman led the team with nine points and Pacie Denney chipped in six.
Stars outlast Raiders
BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team outlasted the Southern Wells Raiders on Friday for a 51-49 win in overtime at Stardome.
The Starfires (9-8, 2-3 ACAC) had a four-point lead after the first quarter and went into intermission ahead by the same margin. The advantage increased to six with one quarter to play only to see the Raiders (4-13, 0-5 ACAC) rally to force overtime.
With the score tied at 42-apiece, South Adams outscored Southern Wells 9-7 to get a win heading into Tuesday’s ACAC tournament opener at home against Woodlan.
Emilee Myers scored 18 points to lead the Starfires, who got 15 and 13 points respectively from Lydia Loshe and Shaelynn Bowman.
The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 36-31. Macie Hirschy scored 11 points for the Stars and Ali Smith chipped in 10 points.
