VAN WERT, Ohio — The Indians were on the verge of a weekend with back-to-back losses.
Payton Jutte made sure it didn’t happen.
Jutte swished a 3-pointer from the right wing at the horn Saturday, lifting the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team to a 60-59 victory over the host Lincolnview Lancers.
The Indians (6-4) trailed the Lancers (6-5) after each of the first three quarters. They were behind by seven in the first quarter and nine at half. The deficit was cut to eight points with one period to play before the Indians began their comeback.
Jutte, who earlier in the night surpassed 900 career points, scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. He sits at 911 points for his career, and is averaging 20 points per game.
Clay Schmitz followed Jutte with 15 points, and Grant Knapke chipped in 11 points.
A season-high 18 points from Regan Martin helped Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team beat Lincolnview, 59-50. Brian Bihn tossed in 13 points, while Cobe Wendel, Ryne Post and Ian Homan had six points each.
Tribe drops third straight
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team lost its third game in a row Saturday with a 53-32 setback to the Liberty-Benton Eagles.
The Indians (4-6) fell behind 15-5 after the first quarter and went into intermission trailing 29-12. They had their best offensive output in the third by scoring 12 points, but the Eagles extended the lead with 16 points of their own.
Alli Vaughn scored nine points to lead Fort Recovery, which shot 29 percent from the field. Val Muhlenkamp and Paige Fortkamp scored six points each, and Kierra Wendel chipped in five points. Muhlenkamp led the Indians with seven rebounds and Olivia Patch hauled in five boards.
Three make state
BUNKER HILL — Lita Chowning is heading back to the state finals. She’ll have two teammates with her.
Chowning, a Jay County senior, was runner-up in the 113-pound weight class during the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling Association north regional on Friday at Maconaquah.
Chowning becomes Jay County’s first two-time girls state qualifier.
Lizzie Dollar (98 pounds) and Nevaeh Cox (170), who were both third in their weight classes, advance to the state finals Friday at Hamilton Heights. The top four in each weight class advance to the state meet.
Penn scored 209 points to win the meet that had 41 scoring teams. Lafayette Jefferson was second with 84, and host Maconaquah was third with 55. Jay County placed fourth with 52 points.
Brown, Bruins down Stars
BERNE — The South Adams boys basketball team couldn’t slow down the state’s leading scorer in a 61-35 loss to the Blackford Bruins on Saturday at Stardome.
Blackford sophomore Luke Brown finished 10-of-20 from the field, including 6-of-14 from long range, and made all nine of his free throws to finish with 35 points. His scoring average dipped to 38 points per game, 5.5 PPG more than No. 2 state scorer Luke Bumbalough of New Castle.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Starfires (1-9), who open Allen County Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at home against Woodlan (2-9).
Nick Miller scored 12 points to lead the Starfires while hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds. Drew Stutzman and Brayden Gilbert finished with seven points each.
Dalton Willmann of Blackford (7-2) joined Brown in double figures with 10 points.
Summersett wins
NEW HAVEN — Christian Summersett won the 170-pound championship on Saturday in the Bill Kerbel Invitational at New Haven.
Carroll won the 14-team field with 228 points. Bishop Dwenger totaled 201.5 points for second and South Adams scored 164 for third.
Summersett, a Starfire sophomore, went 4-0 on the day for the first tournament win of his career.
Logan Bauman (106 pounds), and Andre Hughes (285) were both runner-up in their respective weight classes. Keegan Rich (113) and Michael Rupp (120) were both third while AJ Dull (138) and Collin Shaffer (195) both placed fourth.
Jay goes 6-1
RICHMOND — The Jay County junior varsity wrestling team went 6-1 on Saturday in the Wayne County Classic at Richmond.
The Patriots opened the tournament with a 42-24 win over Union County before a 54-18 loss to host Richmond. Jay County then defeated Monroe Central (42-36), Northeastern (66-18), New Castle (42-27), Winchester (43-24) and Tri (48-31).
Derrick Potter was a perfect 7-0 for the day, and Jayden Maymi finished 5-1. Dylan Racster, Dakota Lairson and Dawson Frasher each went 5-2, Ryan Herring ended 4-1 while Ramon Bravo finished 4-2.
Ben Hunter ended 4-3 for the tournament, while Lizzie Dollar (2-0) and Nevaeh Cox (1-0) also finished with winning records.
JC places sixth
FRANKLIN — The Jay County elementary wrestling team finished sixth on Saturday in the ISWA Elementary Dual State Wrestling Tournament at Franklin High School.
Jay County went 2-1 in pool competition with wins over Franklin and Columbus North before a loss to Avon.
In the consolation tournament, Jay County beat Roncalli ahead of a loss to Center Grove in the fifth-place match.
Landon Blowers and Bradin Daniels each went 5-0 for Jay County. Mallory Winner and AJ Myers both finished 4-1.
