Local 4-H organizations are getting scientific.

Jay County and Blackford County 4-H will host the Science Spark Club beginning Monday at West Jay Community Center in Dunkirk.

The club for those in fourth through 12th grade will offer attendees opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts. Those will include coding, designing and engineering.

Sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 21 and 28 at the community center, 125 Hoover St. A meal will be provided.

The fee is $5 for active 4-H members and $20 for non-members.

Chapter forms 

A new chapter of A Better Life — Brianna’s Hope has started in Bluffton.

The organization, a support and recovery group for those dealing with substance abuse, was originally founded in Redkey in honor of Jay County resident Brianna DiBattiste. DiBattiste died in 2014 after a struggle with addiction. 

The new Bluffton chapter will meet each Monday at Sonlight Wesleyan Church, 2350 S. Indiana 1, Bluffton. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. with the group meetings to follow from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

A Better Life — Brianna’s Hope has more than 30 chapters across Indiana and Ohio.

The following are residents were named to the dean’s list at Ball State University for the fall semester.

From Portland were Randi Auker, Alex Bader, Sophie Bader, Jordan Cordell, Amanda Ferguson, Gwyneth Harris, Malarie Houck, Lexie Hudson, Jessica Kerrigan, Crystal Lee, Hannah Link, Heather Lugar, Hope Lugar, Katie Lyons, Savanna Mace, Lilly McClung, Brock McFarland, Alexis Myers, Robert Myers, Bowen Runyon, Brooke Sanders, Bryan Stancliffe, Anne Vormohr and Emily Westgerdes. 

Dunkirk students were Mustafa Aly, Emily Back, Matthew Clark, Megan Clark, Taylor Donathan, Spencer Evans, Breea Holdcroft and Bryttani Knight. 

From Redkey were Madison Franklin, Alli Louck, Isabelle Minnich, Katlynne Steveson and Megen Yates. 

From Pennville was Karen Huey, and from Bryant was Lyla Muhlenkamp. 

Students from Fort Recovery were Brook Acheson, Emily Alig, Nathan Cain, Christy Garke, Adam Hess, Justin Hess, Nikki Keller, Carly Link, Nathan Lochtefeld, Emily May, Austin Pohl, Whitney Schaefer, Trisha Thien and Hannah Wendel. 

From Geneva was Drea Kolkinn. 



On the list

Alex LeMaster of Portland was recently named to the dean’s list at Trine University for the fall 2018 term.

In order to be named to the dean’s list, a student must complete 15 credit hours and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. LeMaster is a mechanical engineering major.



Blood drive 

The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at Fort Recovery American Legion Hall, 2490 Ohio 49. Moeller Brew Barn in Maria Stein, Ohio, will give everyone who donates a token for a free beer at the business.
