The Chiefs are champions.

East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team defeated South Adams 59-20 on Thursday to clinch the Allen County Athletic Conference championship.

The Chief seventh graders also won, 36-17.

Bennett Weitzel scored 16 points to lead the EJMS eighth grade squad as it moved to 14-1 and finished a perfect 7-0 in ACAC play. Dawson Hundley added 10 points, while Carter Link contributed eight points and Owen Ransom tossed in six points.

Kyle Minger paced South Adams (3-10, 2-4 ACAC) with six points as Josh Amstutz and Hunter Kongar each had five points.

In the seventh grade game, Sam Myers and Abraham Dirksen led East Jay (8-7, 4-3 ACAC) with 12 and nine points respectively. Justin DeHoff contributed four points while Zach McAbee, Wesley Bihn, Koby Lewellen and Bryce Wenk had two points each.

Owen Wanner scored five points for South Adams (3-9, 1-6 ACAC), which also got two points apiece from Graham Subler, Oscar Vasquez, Isaac Dee and Hayden Brown.



EJ beats Stars

BERNE — The East Jay seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both defeated South Adams on Thursday.

The eighth graders bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat to Blackford with a 34-21 win over the Starfires, while the seventh graders moved to 14-1 with a 39-18 victory.

Renna Schwieterman scored 23 points in the winning effort for the EJMS eighth graders (13-2). Lydia Keihn finished with four points as Eden Abshire and Laci McGinnis had two and one point respectively.

Bralee VanSkyock led the seventh graders with eight points and Cash Hollowell followed with seven points. Breanna Dirksen and Sophie Saxman chipped in six points each.

WJ 7th wins

PONETO — West Jay’s seventh grade boys basketball team dominated Southern Wells on Tuesday, 54-30.

The eighth graders lost, 46-35.

Liam Garringer led the way for the Eagle seventh graders (9-2) with 19 points, and Jackson Edwards was close behind with 18 points. Parker Nichols tallied 11 points to give the Eagles three players in double figures. Trevin Dunnington and Jason Ayala had four and two points respectively.

Skyler Bee scored a dozen points in the loss for the eighth graders, who also got 10 points from Tevin Wasson and four from Dominic Newsome. Gabe Goodspeed, Garringer and Nichols had three points each.



Chiefs top Jets

East Jay’s wrestling team improved to 2-3 on the season Thursday with a 50-44 win over Adams Central.

At 85 pounds, Tony Wood won by pin, as did Cody Rowles at 90 pounds. Landon Blowers (102), Conner Specht (175) and Adryon Miller (195) also got pins.

Bradin Daniels won his 95-pound bout by an 8-2 decision, while Landon Garringer, Ricardo Nava and Tayden McDowell all received forfeits.

In reserve action, Presley Kunkle, Carter Barton, Zac Brotherton, AJ Myers, Nate Paxson, Tristan Stout, Layne Reidt and Blowers all won.
