Marisa Bulzone
Marisa Bulzone, age 60, of New York, New York, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, after an extended illness.
She was born on Staten Island, N.Y., on April 12, 1958, the daughter of Ellen and Charles Bulzone.
She was a 1980 graduate of the State University of New York at Albany and was a writer and editor, serving as editorial director at Hearst Books and as executive editor at Stewart, Tabori & Chang. She wrote and collaborated on several award-winning cookbooks; the authors she edited over a 35-year career included Alton Brown, Sara Moulton, Melissa Ben-Ishay and Peter Callahan. Recent projects included co-authoring the book Ladies Who Drink: A Stylishly Spirited Guide to Mixed Drinks and Small Bites and serving as principal writer for the weekly e-newsletter 150ish, which she co-founded in 2012 and which focuses on local food artisans working within a 150-mile radius of New York City.
Marisa was a wonderful cook and loved sharing meals with friends and family. She also found time to knit, and many were warmed by a gift from her.
Survivors include her mother, Ellen (Hanlin) Bulzone of Staten Island, New York; a nephew, Christopher Bulzone (wife: Celina, sons: Caden and Hendrix) of Westerly, Rhode Island; a niece, Jennifer Bluth (husband: Kyle, son: James) of Staten Island, New York; two aunts, Nina (Hanlin) Stultz of Montpelier, Indiana, and Martha (Hanlin) Kimmel of LaOtto, Indiana; an uncle, John Hanlin of Pennville, Indiana; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Bulzone, and brother, Donald Bulzone.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Pennville-Penn Township Public Library.
