FORT RECOVERY — Payton Jutte nearly cut the gap between himself and the 1,000-point mark in half. But it wasn’t enough for the Indians to come away with a win.
Jutte scored 18 points Friday night, bringing him within 20 of the millennium mark, in the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team’s 58-50 loss to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
The Indians were locked in a tie game at home after the opening quarter before the visitors took a three-point lead into the half. Coldwater pushed its advantage to 38-32 with eight minutes to play and racked up 20 points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Jutte’s 18 points tied Andrew Schoen of the Cavaliers (6-6, 2-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) for the game high. He now has 980 points for his career and could surpass the 1,000 mark tonight when the Tribe (8-5, 2-3 MAC) visits Fort Loramie.
Noah Lennartz was the only other Fort Recovery player to reach double figures as he totaled 10 points to go along with four rebounds. Derek Jutte had nine points.
Schoen scored 11 fourth-quarter points, all from the free-throw line, for the Cavaliers. He shot 13-of-16 from the stripe as the Cavs went 18-for-26 as a team.
Cole Frilling totaled nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Fort Recovery cruised to victory in the junior varsity game, 57-41, after trailing by one at the end of the first quarter. The Indians — Ian Homan and Brian Bihn shared the team high of 15 points while Gavin Thobe added 14 — outscored Coldwater 38-20 over the course of the next two quarters to turn the tide.
